Ubuntu Linux, CrossOver Linux, FireFox - Who Needs Windows?
I am posting this from my tiny ultralight Dell X1, which is not much larger than the new Foleo appliance, but is a full computer. It is running Ubuntu Linux, and I have loaded some Windows applications using the CrossOver Linux software from CodeWeavers, about which I have posted previously. So far, I have successfully installed WordPerfect, Microsoft Office, Quicken, and PDFxChange. I am taking it slowly, but I can already do a lot of what I do with my main Windows computer on the Linux platform. As software becomes more of a SaaS (Software as a Service) system, the operating system will become increasingly irrelevant, and Microsoft will no longer be able to sell the operating system. As an example, I am running the Linux version of FireFox and Thunderbird, so my web browsing and email is identical in user experience as my Windows machine. Since I am using Firefox, I can access my Office host machine using GoToMyPC and LogMeIn. I can access the Amicus Attorney Server application, which gives me access to my Calendar, Tasks, Contacts, Phone Messages, and Case Management functions. That basically is my law practice in a box, and Windows is only required on the host machine. In addition, as I send my PDF files to the Lexbe website, and organize and access them over the Web, I will be able to access all of my litigation and documents over the Web using the Linux box. Document assembly is coming more slowly, but I am still working on it. Stay tuned.

Great to hear! I'm excited to see Ubuntu being used in a law office. I've used Ubuntu for over three years (through law school and my clerkship) and I've never looked back. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Why not switch from MS Office to Open Office?
