The FutureLawyer has used GoToMyPc to access the office server for several years. It is bullet-proof and inexpensive, and provides access to office files from any web-based computer in the world. Then, Citrix, the on-line remote access behemoth, acquired GoToMyPc, and, surprise, made it better. So, when Citrix recently acquired virtualization company XenSource, I took notice. I have been playing around with VMWare, one of the virtualization competitors, and the leader in the market. Soon, virtual servers will support guest operating systems of all stripes. We are coming into a time when the OS of a system is irrelevant. Which brings me to the $64 question. Why would somebody pay $200 to $400 for Microsoft Vista? All of the various flavors of Linux are free, and, using virtualization software, you can run any other operating system within it. For that matter, why pay for Mac OS whatever? Windows XP Professional came with each of my Dell computers, and I am keeping it around for the software that uses it. I will be keeping an eye on what Citrix does with XenSource. If you are in a law firm that pays big bucks for software implementations, you should too.
