Recent stories about the mistreatment of Chinese workers who make most of the electronics we buy and use, and many of the toys and sports gear we buy and use, stands as a sad counterpoint to yesterday's Super Bowl commercials advocating a return to American manufacturing. Are we willing to pay premium prices for our goods? Is the consumer responsible for mistreatment of the workers who create the products? Tough questions. Do we want to know the answers? The U.S. doesn't exactly have a spotless history when it comes to worker treatment in manufacturing. Bringing the jobs home won't solve all the problems. Large multinational corporations say they are assuming responsibility for human rights and environmental problems caused by the manufacture of their products. But, how is a moral imperative measured?
