Virtual Router Plus - Your Computer Is Your Router
Virtual Router Plus Turns Your Windows 8 PC Into a Wi-Fi Hotspot.
My previous favorite traveling app was Connectify, which allows the sharing of an Internet connection via wifi without a router. In the old days, I used to carry a portable router, which was a bear to set up in a hotel room, and never really worked well. Windows 7 and Windows 8 have advanced to the point that they allow a user to create a personal WiFi Hotspot on their notebook computer. Virtual Router Plus is free, easy to use, and much less complex than Connectify. It is similar in use to the WiFi Hotspot feature of modern smartphones and connected tablets. When I don't connect to a wired connection when I travel, I carry a Verizon Wireless 4G USB stick that gives my notebook direct access to the Internet. Now, I can fire up Virtual Router Plus and share that connection with family or others anywhere I go. Don't use public WiFi. Carry your own. If you do use public WiFi, set up a VPN with one of the free VPN clients out there.
