US Carriers Relent and Agree to Cell Phone Unlocking. Sometimes an overbearing Government comes in handy. With a Federal Regulatory gun to their heads, the major cell phone carriers have agreed to permit the unlocking of eligible cell phones. Of course, you won't be able to do this until your service contract is over, or you pay the early termination fee. But, most devices will be usable on any carrier after that (We Verizon users would be limited to Sprint and Verizon, due to the CDMA technology). While most users won't need this ability, it is nice to know that we won't be in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).
