Intel to scrap McAfee name, give away mobile security tools - Computerworld. Intel Security, formerly known as McAfee Security, was born this week in an announcement at CES 2014. Intel purchased the security company for billions of dollars recently, and was no doubt not impressed with founder and former owner, John McAfee's antics last year. Whatever the security suite is called, the free Windows Security Essentials, and free Spybot Security, are the only two security packages I have used for some time. Microsoft has been proactive about security for some time; and you are more likely to get a virus or malware infection by visiting an infected site than by something coming from outside. Most interlopers are invited in by unsuspecting users. McAfee Security has always felt bloated and slow to me, and I never felt I should have to pay for something that should be built into the system. What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, no?
