As Law Prof, Gorsuch Banned Laptops, Garnered Respect | National Law Journal. If I had a laptop when I was in Law School, I would have been upset if a Professor banned their use during class. But, the arguments made in this article about the new Supreme Court Justice nominee, Neil Gorsuch, who banned them in his classes, are persuasive. The give and take of a law school class is part of the education; since law students learn the Socratic method, and learn by doing. Argument, counter-argument, discussion, and consensus are impossible when everyone is checking their email or Facebook page. I have always taken handwritten notes, both in law school and in my practice. Now, if I am in a seminar, I still use a pen; but, now I use a SmartPen that records the lecture while I write, and I can later follow my note taking and listen again. Now, if Professor Gorsuch banned my SmartPen, he would have a fight on his hands.
