Secure Messaging for Lawyers. As I discussed this morning, lawyers deal with confidential client data and communications every day, and are required to keep the data private. While encrypting smartphone content and using a password or pin to gain access to the phone, as well as two step authentication are all valid security measures, it is also necessary to communicate in written form with clients and others. For that, email is, even encrypted, not the best way to go, since, at some point in its travels, email is unencrypted. Text messaging using Signal is my preferred option. Signal messages are encrypted from end to end, and no data is kept by the company on its servers that is personally identifiable. Of course, the recent hacking scandal which allows hackers to gain access to smartphones would make such security meaningless, since the hacker could track the typed characters, Signal is the best way to communicate with confidential contacts or clients, as long as you secure the smartphone. This is a comprehensive article about secure messaging, and should be required reading for every lawyer.
