How to Develop Situational Awareness | The Art of Manliness. Do you really know what is going on around you? Are you situationally aware. Are you mindful of yourself and your relationship to the people and things around you? All of these skills are used by trained individuals to get along in a chaotic world. Meditation or mindfulness is not the skill of withdrawing into yourself and cutting off the outside world. It involves being aware of self; while, at the same time, being aware of what is happening around you. We don't really observe our surroundings, do we? Do you notice the things that others are doing? Do you notice how many doors are in a room? One way to learn to do this is by naming things in your mind. What color is the door? How many lights are in the room? What is on the wall? All of these things help us to be more "present", and have a calming effect. We are better prepared for the things that happen. Get into the habit of being present, really. You will be surprised at how interesting life gets.
