Antibacterial Soap Is No Longer FDA-Approved. Like the bottled water craze, the hammer has come down on all the expensive, cutesy, cool new anti-bacterial soaps. Turns out, ordinary soap does just as good a job at cleaning. Just like modern tap water, which is cheap, does just as good a job at hydrating humans as the expensive bottled water that is drawn from the purest springs in the world. Then, placed in an expensive plastic bottle that takes 100 years to decompose in a waste dump somewhere. Do we have an unlimited appetite for hype? I think I am going to take all the money I save not buying bottled water and cute soap, and buy a new SmartWatch.
Fridge Has Built In Grocery Store CES 2016 is definitely the year of the Internet of Things. Samsung is introducing a new fridge that has a grocery store list built in. You will be able t order groceries from the list, and will be able to know what is in the fridge from wherever you are. Since it runs on the Tizen OS, I assume that there will be a SmartWatch app. Hmmm...tap the wrist and order groceries. Gives new meaning to: "Honey, bring home a quart of milk".
Drink To Your Health: Study Links Daily Coffee Habit To Longevity. As a recent heart surgery survivor, I am happy to report that coffee is probably good for you. There is no way to know, of course, but the studies are promising. I particularly like the fact that I am not restricted to decaf for the rest of my life. I have cut way back, and pretty much only have the morning cup, and decaf for the rest of the day. But, this study has lifted my spirits on my birthday. On the other hand, you can probably find a study somewhere that just about any food is either good for you or dangerous. Just stay away from tobacco and alcohol.
Low Fat or Low Carb: How to Really Lose Weight : Health : Latinos Post. Here is another study about the relative benefits of low fat diets and low carb diets. The author posits that you can lose more weight on a low fat diet. However, in my experience, you lose more weight on the diet you can live with; and, for me, that has been low carb. A photo of myself in the ABA Journal article on Pets in the Law Office a couple of years ago got me started seriously, and, two years later, I am 100 pounds lighter; although, I am still heavier than I would like to be. I know, at our age, we should just be glad to be alive. But, I can speak from experience when I say that high fat foods tend to taste better, and I can't stand being on a diet that prohibits me from eating eggs, butter, red meat, and other things that I love. So, by all means, try both diets. Keep the one that works. But, don't read medical studies and be swayed by someone who isn't living your life. By the way, if you don't want a completely carb restricted diet, try the Paleo diet. Jeb Bush has lost 40 pounds on it, and looks great.
ABA TECHSHOW 2015 | Taste of TECHSHOW 2015. Jeff Taylor and I are hosting a dinner tonight at the Seven Lions restaurant in Chicago. TechShow participants get to bend our ears about all things Android, and we don't mind. Android lawyers are a definite minority; but, if Jeff and I have our way, there will be a lot of Apple converts.
How To Quit Sugar In 5 Days. You don't need five days to quit sugar. You just need the will to do it. After a while, it becomes second nature. Quitting sugar is the easiest diet in the world. It saves money at the grocery store; because, a quick glance at the labels of most processed food will show that we have been addicted to sugar by some big corporations. They know that eating sugar prompts a cycle of binge eating that is difficult to control. Say what you want about caffeine in coffee. It is a far superior drug to sugar. While sugar substitutes have their own health issues, you will at least not be fat when they hurt you. In my case, quitting sugar three years ago has had only good effect. You can eat a lot of fatty foods, many of which taste great, if you are not building fat with sugar.
Heavy drinkers may cut down their cancer risk by drinking coffee | Diabetes Insider. As I drink my morning coffee, I am happy to report that it has cancer fighting properties; and, while I seldom drink alcohol, this study has shown it even fights liver cancer in alcoholics. It isn't the caffeine that fights cancer; but, the anti-oxidants in the coffee, and they are supposedly effective against strokes, memory problems, liver diseases and mood swings. Coffee...it's what's for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
My CookBook: View your recipes on the wrist ['Watch' This App]. I don't cook. I eat. But, if I were a cook, how handy would it be to get rid of the cookbooks, both paper and tablet and phone, and just glance at my watch as I go through the recipes? Android Wear is a smooth, readable SmartWatch interface that I have found very useful in my professional life. I can glance at the watch when it vibrates and see all my email, texts, phone calls, and Google Now notifications. It even prompts me when my favorite movies or TV shows are available. Reminding me of calendar events has saved me on more than one occasion from being late or absent. For a cook, how cool would it be to follow a recipe or video as you work in the kitchen? Just let me know when dinner is ready.
