Randy Pausch On Time Management

Lawyers need to manage time as much as anyone. Juggling the priorities requires skill and technique. This hour long talk on time management by Randy Pausch is one of the best I have ever seen. I guarantee you that you will come away from it with a new appreciation for the value of time, and a few specific things you need to be doing to manage your time better.

The Last Lecture | Randy Pausch

The Last Lecture | Randy Pausch.Thelastlecture Some time last year, I wrote a post with a link to "The Last Lecture" of Randy Pausch, a virtual reality computer scientist who died, too soon, of pancreatic cancer. In the custom of academia, he gave a last lecture; except that his, coming from a dying man, became an Internet phenomenon. This past weekend, I discovered that the lecture had been turned into a book, and it now has an honored place on my bookshelf. His funny, poignant, instructive, inspiring, cheerful essay on living a successful and happy life should be required reading and viewing by every person on the planet. You need to read this book. You need to watch the lecture.

What About Nuns Who Drink Five Cups Of Coffee A Day?

Nun Brains Show Language Skills Predict Future Alzheimer’s Risk | Wired Science | Wired.com.Nunbrains Recent studies appear to show that people who drink five or more cups of coffee a day may be better able to fight off dementia in old age. Now, we are seeing that nuns who develop high order language skills in their teens also have less likelihood of developing Alzheimer's as well. It probably doesn't have anything to do with their being nuns; the nuns were merely the group studied. However, my experience with nuns is that their rulers are more likely to cause dents in the head, which can, in my personal experience, cause confusion in old age. Luckily, I drink 5 to 8 cups of coffee a day, and I developed language skills early in life. Developing those skills was more a matter of self defense than anything else. Maybe the nuns knew something I didn't. I hope that cancels out the effect of the nuns on my later brain development. Of course, some people who know me think that the nuns had very little effect upon me; but, then again, I think I will start drinking more coffee, just to make sure.

Black Holes For Idiots

As an after Fourth of July brain teaser, I offer this Idiot's Guide to Black Holes. You know you always wanted to know what they were and where they came from. We may not know how they really form; but, after watching this you will know more than you do now:

Sitting By The Pool On Planet Earth

Seimmingpool I am spending this Holy Saturday by the pool in the backyard. (No, this isn't my pool; mine isn't big enough for racing stripes. But, I am too lazy to go into the house and get the camera). This is one of the few perks of living in Florida, and I am not ashamed to admit that I am lazily contemplating my navel while floating on a pool float. Of course, now I am blogging from the relative coolness of my chair under the umbrella over the patio table. I am using a new Netbook, an HP Mini, that I love, primarily because, unlike the ASUS EEE 1000HD that I have been using, it has a huge right shift key that makes typing on it a pleasure. It has a smaller screen than the EEE but a much better keyboard. I gave the old one to She Who Must Be Obeyed for Easter, killing two birds with one stone. Oh, well. I hear a pool calling my name. Happy Easter.

American Red Cross - Are You Prepared?

American Red Cross. I visted a client in the hospital this morning, who had been there for several days. I wasn't notified immediately because he didn't have an emergency contact card in his wallet. That got me thinking. I didn't either. Do you? Especially if you live alone, you need to carry something on your person to tell the first responders whom to call. Do it now. Here is the card provided by the American Red Cross. Here is the emergency card download site, so you can print your own.

Apple Sued For Patent Infringement Because Others Have Turned iPhone Into Ebook Reader

Apple Sued For Patent Infringement Because Others Have Turned iPhone Into Ebook Reader | Techdirt. AngryMan And, in the category of "are you kidding me?" we have the latest example of clients and attorneys making the rest of us look foolish. First, how did these plaintiffs get a patent on reading and books, just by saying "electronic"? Second, in the arcane world of patent law, does anybody ever consider the original reason for patent and copyright? Like, uh, innovation? I have proudly exercised my right as an American consumer, to use the tech gadgets I have purchased, any way I like. Am I going to get sued for using my iTouch as an Ereader? Good luck, guys, I am judgment proof.

The Green Lawyer - Would You Drive This To The Courthouse?

Aptera. Aptera The Aptera 2E is a two passenger, electric hybrid, three wheel vehicle. It has a top speed of 90 mph., and manufacturing begins in October of this year. In addition to green functionality, Aptera has used recycled plastics in the seats and interior construction. It accelerates from 0 to 60 in ten seconds, and it goes 100 miles on an 8 hour charge. If you use the gas engine, it goes 300 mpg. It has dual air-bags, solar assisted climate control, LED interior and exterior lighting, and optional GPS navigation. It will cost between $25,000 and $50,000, depending. You can put a deposit of $500 on one of these, if you live in California. You can let them know you are interested if you live in another State. Of course, you need to decide if you are serious about helping save the planet. Somehow, I think this product is going to be too pricey and too green for the great, huddled masses. What do you think?

Bedlam breaks out at Circuit City - But Not At Mine

Bedlam breaks out at Circuit City | Nanotech - The Circuits Blog - CNET News. Circuitcity Maybe California is different than Florida. This story about bedlam at a close out sale at Circuit City in Southern California doesn't come close to the truth here in Central Florida. My local Circuit City is closing as well; however, the store about 15 blocks from my house, is across the street from a Best Buy, and the discounts yesterday were only 10 % on most items. There was no bedlam, and few shoppers. I agree that Circuit City was not as well run, in a corporate sense, as Best Buy. However, Circuit City had a more relaxed, and personal, flavor. I will miss it. In any event, I will be checking it at the store every few days; it is close, and I anticipate some real bargains in the coming weeks.
