Link: County Considers Free Wi-Fi for Residents - Yahoo! News. It looks like the movement is on. Suffolk County, New York, is following the lead of other cities, and promising to provide free wireless WiFi Internet within its borders. These WiFi municipal hotspots are one of the best uses of tax dollars I can think of. Why has it taken this long? Well, it could be because the cable and phone companies are into the business in a big way. Or, it could be that the will just hasn't been there. Government moves slowly. This is a prime example. I would still rather rely on my Verizon EV-DO wireless broadband. I know that I will get a signal anywhere I go. However, my mobile phone has a Wi-Fi card built in, and it might be nice to browse the web at broadband speeds anywhere in town.
