They have been poking fun at the FutureLawyer lately for sticking with an obviously flawed Microsoft operating system, solely for reasons connected with the legal specific software. It looks like Apple has its own security problems with OS X 10.4. Uh, guys, does having to patch 15 (count 'em) security flaws make Apple a more secure operating system? Of course, Microsoft has had to patch hundreds of problems; no excuses here. However, he who has a glass house shouldn't throw stones. Ya think?

Link: Dell raises recall to 4.2 million laptop batteries - Yahoo! News. The first thing I did when I got my new Dell laptop was look at the battery. Made in Korea. Great. Sony's China made batteries are being recalled every day, and Sony is taking a big hit in the pocketbook. Bragging about a "Made in Korea" label. Who knew? The only thing for certain is that none of these batteries have a "Made in America" label. Have you checked the country of origin for your laptop battery yet?

Link: Review -- Targus Bluetooth Mini Mouse with Bluetooth Adapter. One of the things I like about my new Dell D-620 laptop is that it has two mouse options. It has the infamous IBM pointing stick (a little blue button between the G, H and B keys on the keyboard, and the standard mouse pad. Both options have two buttons underneath, and work great. No scroll wheel, but usable. However, I have always preferred a separate mouse, to the right side of the keyboard, with the scroll wheel. I have recently been using wireless Logitech mice, which work great, and fit the palm of the hand perfectly. Travel-sized wireless mice, however, can actually be TOO tiny to use comfortably. The Targus bluetooth mouse, however, is in that sweet spot between too small and too large. It won't do for regular use; however, once paired to the laptop via bluetooth, just throw it in the bag or briefcase, and you have mouse action wherever you go. The scroll wheel is essential to my web browsing and document editing, and this one does the job.

This cool little gadget is an International power adapter, for plugging U.S. peripherals and electronic products into foreign wall outlets. We all probably have some of these in the arsenal. I have used them on cruise ships, and in the Caribbean. While I haven't traveled for a while, this product adds something to the International power adapter mix; it has a USB port. So, plug it in anywhere in the world, and plug your sync cable in to it, and you can charge your Treo or other PDA phone without a computer. Just another way to leave the laptop at home.

As if you needed another reason not to install Vista when it comes out; or, at least, a reason to wait a while, this post gives a list of applications that don't play well with Vista. Before you upgrade, if you are going to, make certain that all your apps will work. Surprise, surprise. You can't get this list from Microsoft. They are too busy suing hackers who crack their DRM (Digital Rights Management) scheme to get at media files. If you have kids, games are experiencing especially big problems with the security conscious upgrade.

Christopher Null has a cogent short article on recovering damaged files and partitions from hard drives. Some of the tools he mentions are free, and some cost something; however, they all can save your bacon in a tough situation. My favorite is a free tool (of course), TestDisk , which is an open source solution to this problem. It can recover lost partitions, make non-booting disks bootable again, and leap tall buildings with a single bound. Okay, maybe not tall buildings; but, it can do amazing things with crashed drives. If you have a problem with data, or, if you want to be prepared, check this free software out.

Google, which caved to China censors' desire to control the search results obtained with the popular search engine by its citizens, is apparently not afraid of the Government of Brazil. In an effort to identify individuals allegedly using Orkut, Google's social networking service, to obtain child porn and engage in hate speech, a Federal Judge has ordered Google to supply data about its users in bulk. While the Order is clearly overbroad by U.S. standards, Google's defense is a Motion claiming the data is not available to the Brazilian affiliate, as it is held in the U.S. The battle between free speech and catching bad guys goes on. The Internet crosses borders with ease, and the legal problems are solved differently in every country. Lawyers won't lack for work in this area of the law anytime soon.
