Link: Excite News - Google to File Motion in Orkut Case. Google, which caved to China censors' desire to control the search results obtained with the popular search engine by its citizens, is apparently not afraid of the Government of Brazil. In an effort to identify individuals allegedly using Orkut, Google's social networking service, to obtain child porn and engage in hate speech, a Federal Judge has ordered Google to supply data about its users in bulk. While the Order is clearly overbroad by U.S. standards, Google's defense is a Motion claiming the data is not available to the Brazilian affiliate, as it is held in the U.S. The battle between free speech and catching bad guys goes on. The Internet crosses borders with ease, and the legal problems are solved differently in every country. Lawyers won't lack for work in this area of the law anytime soon.
