Link: Accellion Courier Secure File Transfer Appliance SFTA - Home. My post the other day about large file data transfer highlighted a free solution, YouSendIt , which will send up to 100 megabyte files for free, and there are small monthly subscriptions available for larger files. The problem with free or cheap solutions, however, especially in the legal market, is that large files must be secure, and often contain confidential client information or communications. For these enterprise and mission critical situations, you need a more expensive, but secure system. Enter Accellion, which sells hardware boxes, with included software, that handles large email attachments locally, and keeps them secure. I had a great chat with Y.F. Juan, the marketing guy at Accellion, who advised me that they have solutions from $3,500 and up. One cool feature of this product is that clients and customers can send large emails back to the system owner from a secure website, without any client software or hardware. So, the system works with only the customer or law firm hooked up. It occurred to me that, in an era of electronic discovery, the hardware could easily be modified to act as a secure storage location for all ingoing and outgoing email. Then, when opposing counsel sent a discovery request, everything would be located in one place. Y.F. promised to talk to the engineers at Accellion about that possibility. In the meantime, if you are sending files up to 100 megabytes, with family photos or non-confidential data, use the free solution. If you are a company or law firm with mission critical, and confidential files or data, go with Accellion.
Thanks for the post. Problem with Accellion is that it doesn't really enable you to separate the tiers (keeping data tier apart from web and presentation layers). For optimal security (extremely important in legal), also think about secure file transfer solutions that are more flexible when it comes to network installation.
