I was excited, and I ran home and stayed up all night installing this magical operating system that gave me a graphical interface to replace my DOS command line. The lines were long in 1994, but the bloom is off the Microsoft rose. If you adopt Windows Vista, the chances are it is because you need a new computer, and the operating system is pre-installed. That is okay. Just don't let me catch you standing in line outside of a computer store to give Microsoft your money for Vista. Just don't.

So, get rid of the fancy fonts, the busy backgrounds, and all the frill from your email software settings. You may not be projecting the image you want. I know. I know. It is fun to play with the settings. But, just as you should re-read every email before you press send, you need to look at the format you are sending. It says a lot about you as a lawyer.

If you have a notebook computer; even a good one, the keyboard is never as full travel, roomy or as functional as a full-sized keyboard. When at home or the office, it is a simple matter to attach a full sized keyboard. I plug the notebook into a docking station, and use a full sized keyboard, mouse and monitor. When traveling, however, you are generally limited to the notebook keyboard, which can get cramped. So, here is a keyboard for you. It is a little bulky for frequent travel; however, if you are going on a trip, and you will be staying at a fixed location, like a hotel room or friend's house, this might be worth throwing in the bag. It is a full keyboard with a flip up stand for the notebook computer. It plugs in to an available USB port, and, presto, chango, you have a keyboard, and the monitor screen is at eye height. Great idea.

Let me take this opportunity to ask you to please, please, wait 6 months to a year before you do it. And, then, buy a new computer with Vista preinstalled. Still can't stand to wait? Okay, okay. At least, bookmark the  RadarSync webpage. They are collecting drivers for all your peripherals at one place, which will simplify your finding drivers to load for all of your stuff. Sound complicated? It is. Which is why, dodo, that I told you to wait.

This is the largest of the legal oriented tech events, and you can check out the vendors and the keynotes here , and you can go directly to the websites of just about every legal tech vendor on the planet. Link: TheStar.com - Business - Vista's legal fine print raises red flags. If it seems like I am on a campaign against Vista, perhaps I am. Never have so many been asked to pay so much for so little. I realize that we all will be stuck with Vista when we upgrade our current computers, as OEMs will likely only be selling computers with Vista pre-installed. However, this article highlights the problems with Microsoft taking greater control of the operating system, even after it is purchased, and the legal strictures are chilling. Aside from a pretty interface, and allegedly better security, Vista doesn't do anything better than XP, and, it can be argued that Mac OSx and Linux do both better. I am sticking with XP, which I finally, after 5 years, feel comfortable with, and I will likely keep it until the cows come home.

If you don't have a built-in EV-DO wireless broadband antenna (which is one of the nicest features of my Dell D620 notebook), and you don't have a PC Card slot, next month you will be able to sign up with Sprint or Verizon for Wireless broadband anyway. The USB Wireless broadband EV-DO modem is here, and it will permit access to the EV-DO network by plugging in to any available USB port. Sprint charges $59.95 a month for unlimited access, and Verizon charges the same if you have a voice plan also. Believe me when I say that it is worth every penny, even if the only traveling you do is around town. WiFi hotspots are becoming more common; however, they often cost up to $10 an hour. You can use EV-DO anywhere, and the coverage is great. It is truly no brainer broadband. No more excuses. Now you just have to plug it in.
