As more users come to the Ubuntu Linux fold, hackers and badsters are invading the formerly pristine Linux wilderness looking for security holes. Linux, by its nature, is more secure than Windows; many operations require password access. However, Linux isn't perfect, and Dan Covington, of Kansas Business Attorney alerted me to the fact that Ubuntu Linux reads certain password files that most users would rather be kept private. Enter AppArmor, which is a security extension for Ubuntu Linux. Security is for everyone.

Link: Excite News - Yahoo Adds Features to Popular E-Mail. Do you use Yahoo mail? Didn't think so. I don't use web based mail, as I am perfectly happy with Thunderbird, from the Mozilla organization. However, I see more and more Google mail addresses. Why is Yahoo fading from view? Primarily because it lacks features. I switched from Yahoo to Google for RSS feeds, and have been happy with the results. However, the new Yahoo texting feature has been available from Google text for a while. A Firefox plugin makes it point and click simple. Yahoo may be playing a losing game; except for its great groups technology. Unlimited storage space might be the killer feature, though. You will never have to worry about the size of your mailbox again.

Link: Main Page - SystemRescueCd. Every now and then, it is a good idea to reinstall Windows, with a fresh version. No clutter, no files, etc. Then, you can do a clean install of your programs and data from backup. This is a great way to eliminate the flotsam and jetsam that accumulates like gunk in any operating system. The problem with this process is that you have to reinstall and redownload all the Windows updates that have accumulated since your CD was published. This can take hours, and  is a pain. SystemRescue CD uses Linux utilities to create a clean image of your reinstall, and avoids the pain. Try it. You'll like it. It  should keep you going until you switch to Linux completely.

Link: Windows Genuine Advantage suffers worldwide outage, problems galore. Nice to see that Microsoft is looking out for its customers. In addition to using Windows Advantage (the only advantage being to Microsoft_), to keep track of allegedly bogus software; now, the Windows Advantage security system is broken, and legitimate users can't validate their software. Microsoft, ever helpful, recommends the users "try again on Monday". If this latest example of arrogance doesn't flip you to Linux, what will? If we keep putting up with this crap, we deserve to be abused by Microsoft.

My first reaction to this is "Why buy the thing in the first place, and then connect it to T-Mobile's brain dead Edge network?" Duh. The kid wasted 500 hours and a lot of risky soldering to unlock the phone. Perhaps, his energy would have been better spent figuring out how to add features that are lacking in the IPhone; like a removable battery, a decent keyboard, and removable storage. Duh again. This exposition of the cell phone exemption to the DMCA is instructive, however, and implies that the DMCA's more draconian provisions might get exempted out of existence eventually. Information should be free; the truth is out there.

Then, leave behind half of what you packed". Especially in these days of long flight delays, and heightened airport security that takes forever, I try to bring only the essentials. I carry a 2 pound notebook, the Dell X1, which isn't much larger than the Palm
Foleo will be, and it is a real computer. The processor is slow, by today's standards, but quite serviceable, and the hard drive holds 60 Gigabytes of data. When Toshiba gets its new 320 Gigabyte, 2 1/2 inch drive to the market, you have to wonder, where will God put the rest of the world's knowledge? For now, 60 Gig is plenty for traveling.

Link: Toshiba goes big with High Capacity SD cards � Coolest Gadgets. Okay, an SD card with 16 Gigabytes of storage space, or even one with 32 Gigabytes of storage is unbelievable. These guys will be expensive, at $350 for the 16 Gig and $700 for the 32 Gig. But, what about what you could carry around on your Treo with 32 Gigabytes of data? I haven't even filled up my 4 Gig card, and I have my music, my navigations maps for the whole North American continent, all my documents, and God knows what else on it. This development is more reason to believe that we are coming into a time where mobile computing will be in everyone's pocket.

Link: Table For Bedroom Security - Geekologie. If you buy this product, you either need to change neighborhoods, or go see a marriage counselor. Is it just me, or is this like having a loaded gun in your bedroom? Seems to me that it is more likely that She Who Must Be Obeyed might get more use out of this table than I would. Of course, if you put a lamp on top of it, you might get enough of a head start to get out the door and down the stairs before she got a hold of it.

Runs for Sale? A Modest Proposal

Link: Excite  -  Sports News. The last place Texas Rangers scored 30 runs in yesterday's game to defeat the Orioles in the first game of a double-header, 30 to 3. They got 29 hits. In one game. The 30 runs were a Major League record. Since I root for the lowly, last place Devil Rays, I suggest a Major League rules change. We should handicap games. Texas should be able to sell all the runs they didn't need yesterday (26 by my count) to the Devil Rays, to be used as needed everytime the Rays have to play the Yankees or the Red Sox. This rule should apply every time a team loses by more than ten runs, or is in last place at the start of the game. There. You want parity? Here's a beginning.
