As you contemplate a night of celebration of the New Year, it might be beneficial to think about George Washington and the time between December 25th, 1776 and January 3, 1777. Washington had recently retreated from New York, fearing that his small army of 5,000 men would be trapped on Long Island. As the year ended, he was encamped, in Winter, without food or funds. His letters showed that he was about to give up the whole thing. Then, as the New Year beckoned, he made a bold decision. On Christmas night, he crossed the Delaware River, and took Trenton in a surprise attack. He knew the soldiers would be drinking and celebrating Christmas and the holidays, and took advantage of their inebriated state. (Perhaps a lesson tonight?) As battles go, it wasn't much, but days later, the attack on, and  taking of, Princeton, proved to be the turning point of the war. Our battles, as we face a New Year, don't really compare to the battle for freedom, and life and death, do they? Something to think about while we have friends and neighbors far away in Iraq and Afghanistan fighting for us.

New Year's Resolutions

I hate New Year's Resolutions. They never last. So, none for me this year. I just want to live each day that I can spend all my spare time finding cool gadgets and software for you, dear reader.

First Android Powered Cell Phones in 2008?

Link: Google-powered mobile phones to make a February debut? | APC Magazine. It looks like the new Linux based Android cell phones will be shown, in prototype form, in February. Proprietary cell phone systems, like Palm, Windows Mobile,and  IPhone, should be very worried, as Google is poised to become the standard almost overnight. The first real Android phones are expected in late 2008. For now, I am very happy with my Palm Centro; but, I think it will be good to have open source cell phones. Linux and Android are tailor made for small devices, and promise innovation around every turn.

Link: Palm Announces Verizon Treo 755p! - Treo and PalmOS news. Verizon has finally announced the successor to the Treo 700p. The 755p loses the stubby antenna and is smaller and trimmer than the 700. However, Palm is a little too late with this phone, in my opinion. I have already switched to Sprint, and the Centro. This tiny little smart phone does everything the 755p does, and does it well. The tiny footprint slides into any pocket, and doesn't even weigh enough to notice. I love the Centro, and I will stay with Sprint. I should say that  I have found Sprint's EvDO speeds not to match Verizon's , however, and I can't figure out why. They use the same network, after all. Oh, well.

If you celebrate a different tradition, Happy Holidays to you. Maybe next year, more men and women will look in a mirror and decide to be part of world peace instead of world war. Yeah, I know. Not going to happen. But, Christmas is a time when we celebrate possibility, isn't it?

Link: How to Retrieve or Reset your Lost Windows Password. I hesitated for a moment with this post, because I don't want to help hackers or other bad persons to break into your machine. However, this information is freely available on the web, so the cat is out of the bag anyway. As I grow older, and my passwords proliferate, I sometimes find myself forgetting my logon password for Windows XP. Each succeeding iteration of Windows makes it more difficult to access a computer (this is a good thing); however, I support over a dozen computers at my office and home, and it is next to impossible to remember all the passwords. This has proven to be a real problem when I try to access my server from the road, and the screensaver has put up the logon screen. I use strong passwords (combinations of letters and numbers), so they are difficult to keep track of. This little video will give you some tips that might help you in such a situation. If all else fails, and you have imaged your drive using Norton Ghost or similar software, you can always reinstall Windows from your CD or DVD drive, and restore the data files. Don't restore the image, because that will recreate the password block. Once the data files and documents are reinstalled, you can reinstall the applications from the CDs or the Net.

It contains antivirus and antimalware apps that automatically update themselves and disinfect the computer when connected to the net. If they work, this could be the answer for non-geeks who don't want to load and configure and run software solutions on their computers. It also meets the American quick fix psyche, that wants a plug and play solution to problems. Just plug it in and go. Now, if someone could invent an automatic bill paying drive that downloads money.
