Link: OLPC head of software and content resigns, possibly over transition to XP - Engadget.
I am a believer in the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project. I even bought a couple last Christmas so that one could be donated to a child in Africa. However, my daughter and I found the Linux version used for the OS to be difficult to use and navigate; as I suspect others have. Now, Nicholas Negroponte is reportedly switching to XP, which is a more familiar environment. The people in the Linux world are upset, and it is rumored that he lost his head of software over the issue. But, the fact remains that Linux, as an easy to install and use desktop, just isn't there yet. I say that as a proud member of the Ubuntu Linux fraternity, and I have installed and used it a lot. However, the graphics support is sorely lacking, and it really takes some down and dirty command line hijinks sometimes. XP is mature, familiar, and, now that Vista is out there in the world, relatively inexpensive.
