If, like me, you can't get your wife and kids to return your phone calls, you have learned that they are used to communicating via text message, and that your daughter has the keyboard of her cell phone glued to her fingers. She Who Must Be Obeyed divides her time between talking on the cell phone, and ignoring my calls; however, if I send a text message to her, it will eventually provoke a response. These lists, (thanks to LifeHacker) will allow you to send text messages to any phone, and are carrier specific. Send emails that are converted to texts and that are received by any cell phone? Marvelous.

I first wrote this post a couple of years ago, and it has come to be a Thanksgiving Tradition. So, here it is again. Happy Thanksgiving.

10. Conducting a trial on a small wooden ship would be difficult.
9. The Seamen's Union would go on strike, and refuse to offload passengers and freight until their lawyers conducted settlement negotiations.
8. It would have taken years to get zoning approval for the houses the Pilgrims wanted to live in.
7. Where would all of the secretaries and paralegals have slept?
6. Contract negotiations with the Indians would have delayed the food delivery by months.
5. Litigation over the failure to pay a minimum wage to the food preparation staff would have resulted in a strike, and nobody would get to eat.
4. A lawsuit over the despoliation of the environment would have caused the crops to go unharvested.
3. The Indians would have filed a lawsuit claiming that the Pilgrims were trespassing on tribal land, and obtained an injunction.
2.  The Society for the Preservation of the Flowers of May would have  prevented the  docking of the ship, for tradename infringement.

And, drum-stick roll , please, the Number One reason  to be thankful there  were no lawyers on the MayFlower:

1.  The  Pilgrims  and the Indians would have flooded the colonial courts with litigation for  negligent food preparation when they all got sick from eating wild turkeys.

While Thanksgiving can be a pain; especially when you have to spend time with people you can't stand (yes, I mean the relatives), it is a time to be thankful for what we have. In the U.S. we have a lot, and we whine and complain a lot. Some unsolicited advice - JUST DON'T. Okay, I have said my piece. Remember, all you big law types who can't make the payments, or who have been laid off, that there are a lot of jobs out there for people with your qualifications. If you can't find a job, you can't be fired, can you? Smile, and consider that most of the readers of this blog are highly paid professionals who know where the next meal is coming from. I know that mine is stacked on the dining room table right now, waiting for She Who Must Be Obeyed to begin her annual "10 guests, cook for 30" tradition. So, forget the diet for a day, enjoy your family, and don't come crying to me, about anything! Hey, you could be a turkey, right?

 Kingston DataTraveler 150 thumb drive has 64GB capacity - SlashGear. Ok, I am impressed. This diminutive USB Thumb Drive costs $177 and holds 65 Gigabytes of data. Yes, you read that right. My principal program and data partition contains about 55 Gig of data. I could comfortably image the entire partition with Norton Ghost on a single USB drive and carry it around with me. Incredible doesn't do this little guy justice. If you haven't imaged your drive because you didn't want the hassle of an external drive, you have no more excuses. Do you?

P.S. I just found this guy for $118 at Amazon. Unbelievable. You have got to get one of these.

Florida Standard Jury Instructions - Civil. In the "good" old days, cutting and pasting Jury Instructions, in the frantic atmosphere of the end of a trial, was a real burden. I can remember late nights, huddled over a typewriter with a paralegal, and typing and retyping. The Instruction conference was a nightmare as well. Thanks to the Internet, the Florida Supreme Court has made those days a thing of the past. All of the current Jury Instructions are online, in word processor format. Just cut and paste with the computer, and create a complete set of Instructions without scissors. And, since the Instructions are updated online, you always know you are working with the correct Instructions. If your State hasn't done this yet, show them the Florida site.
