Link: Gmail Backup | Safer is better. Many of you are the designated fix it persons for computer problems in your firm or household. I know I am. As a dedicated Thunderbird user, I searched far and wide for a capable backup for my emails. When I found Mozbackup, I breathed a sigh of relief. Nothing is more frustrating than losing a year or two worth of email that contains important information. While ghosting the hard drive, or backing up the system, can preserve them, email specific backup programs target the emails themselves, and permit porting email from one computer to the other. I do it when I travel with my new little netbook. Back it up from the main system, restore it to the netbook, use the netbook while traveling, and restore it back to the main system after the trip. However, a lot of you, including She Who Must Be Obeyed, and She Who Will Someday Be Obeyed By The Man She Marries, both use Gmail. You might think you don't need to worry about backing up web based email. Trust me, you do. This little program will do the trick. Do it. Do it now.

There are some responsible online service providers in this arena, and I have posted about several of them. However, there are a lot of questions that must be asked of a company that wants you to bring your billing or case management online, and this article about a site that was used by professional photographers for their images going down overnight is a cautionary tale. My biggest requirement of online service providers is providing the ability for lawyers to back up their data, in usable form, locally. That way, if the worst happens, the lawyer will, at least, have a copy of the essential data for his law firm. Remember, be careful out there.

I have advocated for years that solo practice is the best way to go for independent types, who really don't want the fancy office tower expenses. But, it can be lonely out there. Link: Treo Pro Gets Top Honors From PC Magazine - Treonauts. I catch a lot of flak from Apple fans over my Treo addiction. I have loved every Treo since the beginning, and a big reason is that they all have a REAL keyboard. I am a touch typist, and have been typing since my Mom made me take typing at the local high school during the summers when I was a kid. Real keys, real feedback, typing is the best text entry tool yet invented. The new Treo Pro combines a keyboard with sleek good looks, and is unlocked for use with any GSM carrier. PC Magazine has a lot of smart people working for it, and you should read the article. When a CDMA version comes out at Verizon, I am so getting one of these.

I don't see any difference in performance, as the Centro was already the most stable smartphone software I have ever used. Verizon Wireless is known for delaying software updates until they are thoroughly tested.

Fly Away, RedFly - Skies Are Cloudy

Link: Big Screen and Keyboard for your Treo | mytreo.net. I won't be buying a RedFly screen and keyboard companion for my Palm Centro. Don't get me wrong; I was intrigued by the Foleo that Palm announced it was for bringing to market, before it announced it was not bringing it to market. However, on looking at it, I couldn't understand why someone would pay upwards of $500 to add a screen and keyboard to their smartphone. Now, even though the RedFly is being reduced to $199, there is less reason to look at it. First, it is limited to the Windows Mobile platform, which reduces its market to SmartPhones that use that OS. Even more compelling, powerful netbooks with the same weight and form factor are now available that have 120 Gig hard drives, and that run Windows XP or Linux, such as the Asus EEE 1000 that I recently bought and reviewed. The smartphone can be used as a tether to the Internet, or can be connected with an EvDO modem, or connection can be made by the new netbooks by WiFi. These powerful mini computers can be purchased for under $400. I predict that RedFly will not be able to market these things any better than Palm marketed the Foleo.

While many of us never "upgraded" to Windows Vista, Windows 7, promised for mid 2009, appears to have fixed a lot of the flaws in Vista. However, does it contain any must have "new" stuff? Does it do anything you can't do in a stable copy of XP? Probably not; at least, I haven't seen anything. When Microsoft stops updating XP, which may be awhile since it is becoming a very popular netbook OS, perhaps the time may come. There are some really good shell upgrades that keep the XP kernel, but add some of the beautiful aero interfaces of Vista. My XP system looks like Vista; but, is really a dressed up copy of XP. Vista, on the other hand, brings to mind the old saying "You can put lipstick on a pig, but you can't make it beautiful". Oops, I forgot that we all promised to cease saying lipstick and pig in the same sentence after the election. Mea culpa. For all non Latin scholar readers, that's "my bad" in English.

Link: iPhone gets physical keyboard, wants to be normal again - Appletell. I have often wondered what an IPhone would look like with a real keyboard. I know millions of people are quite happy with the virtual onscreen touch keyboard, and I am happy for them. A lot of us, however, like tactile keys, and the ability to use our smartphones one-handed. Apparently, some users wanted the big screen and web experience of the IPhone AND a keyboard. This is the result. Sorry, but this is the ugliest thing I have ever seen.
