The second service pack for Vista will be out next week; Hopefully, it will make Vista work as well as the coming Windows 7. Why fix what is being replaced? Why, because you have it on your system, and you didn't "upgrade" to XP, and you want a good price on Windows 7 upgrades of course. While Vista's look and feel will certainly dominate the OS of the future, its kludgy security scheme and lack of drivers in the beginning will cause it to be remembered as a failed attempt by Microsoft. Of course, Microsoft, being the lumbering giant, always prevails in the end, by sheer force of size and will. And, in the process, some pretty great stuff comes out. I suspect that Windows 7 will put the bloom back on the rose. That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.
In the case of Vista, I'm quite certain that "SP" stands for "Still Pathetic" or "Supremely Psychopathic" rather than Service Pack. It just needs to go away as soon as possible.
Anyone want to bet how long it will take before the first B-school uses the Vista debacle as a "what not to do in marketing" case study? A digital version of the "New Coke/Classic Coke" story? I'd say 5 years or less.
