Lifehacker - Skype 4.1 Beta Adds Screen Sharing and Other New Features - Skype 4.1. I am already using Skype on my desktop and iPod Touch for most of my long distance calls. I also have a Skype in phone number, and forward all of my home phone calls to Skype. We don't have a land line phone hooked up any more. Everything is computer or cell phone based. Skype already does video calls, and and does group blast calls. Now, the new beta is introducing desktop sharing. This will make helping mom with her computer much easier. Color-screen Kindle is years off, says Bezos | Fully Equipped - CNET Reviews. I just don't get the Kindle. Why is a big, bulky ereader necessary? I love reading on the iPod Touch. Even with my old eyes, the print is easy to read, and you can hold it in one hand. What is with the fascination with the Kindle? It is big, expensive, and the books cost real money. I already have a color screen eReader. It is called the iPod Touch, and it works well. It downloads thousands of free eBooks, and I read my RSS feeds with the mobile Google Reader just fine, thank you very much. Can you put your Kindle in your shirt pocket and carry it with you to the Doctor or the ball game or anywhere else for that matter? In addition to watching live stats of the Rays games on the iPod Touch, I can spend the half hour or hour before the game reading RSS feeds or eBooks or whatever. If I ever carry a Kindle to a ball game, shoot me.

Tech heads like the FutureLawyer have a problem, however, (I know, we should all have the problem of year round swimming in the backyard) and that is that our tech stuff isn't waterproof. I have lost a couple of Palm devices in the swimming pool, and one in a canoe. Another was lost in a toilet, and no, I am not going there. Now, it appears that Amphibx has a solution for us, and it only requires a $79.95 investment. I will let you know how this thing works; I have a date with some blue water.

PalmAddicts: Centro – iPod Touch combo. It looks like the FutureLawyer isn't the only one out here using the Palm Centro - iPod Touch combination, as a mobile computing platform. Why not take the best two devices on the planet, each of which does certain things better than any other device, and use them in tandem? Of course, in January, 2010, when Verizon gets the Palm Pre, the iPod Touch might start getting used a little less. Or, if the Pre falters in some tasks, such as game play, I will still likely keep the Touch. On that score, since it is Saturday, I need to give props to the best game I have found for the Touch, Tiger Woods Golf. This golf simulation is amazing, and the game play is so realistic that I can imagine avoiding the bugs and rough and dirt of the real thing. Not really, but if you are a golfer, and you have an iPod Touch, you really need to see this game.

Sprint has Palm Pre exclusive through 2009 | Crave - CNET. I have been jonesing for the new Palm Pre, and have been disappointed that Sprint will have an exclusive on it for a period of time. However, now that my carrier, Verizon Wireless, has announced that it will be carrying the Pre in 2010, and the 6 month exclusivity period for Sprint is confirmed, I am a happy guy. In fact, it is generally best to wait 6 months after the introduction of a new phone, so that the early adopters can get the bugs out. In this instance, Verizon's conservative adoption strategy seems to be a good one. So, Sprint, enjoy your brief 6 months with the Pre. After that time, a lot of your users will be jumping to Verizon Wireless, and I will be joining them.

AT&T CEO Says Wireless Networks Aren't Prepared For Data Traffic -- Frankly, He Should Know | Techdirt. My recent post about three proposed new iPhones, and my assertion that they would not be on my list of things to do as long as they were associated with AT&T brought a comment by a happy Boston user. The network may perhaps be okay in Boston; however, these recent statements by AT&T's CEO should give any prospective AT&T user pause. Briefly, he says the network is deficient because there are too many users competing for bandwidth, and AT&T needs to start charging by the megabyte again. He also promises that the new 4G rollout will solve the problems; of course, expect to pay a lot more for access, and to buy a new device that can access the new network. Thank the Lord that there are competing cell networks who will provide flat rate plans and competent devices. Verizon Wireless has its deficiencies and problems; however, as long as I have a reasonably priced, competent network, that doesn't always make excuses, I will stay with the one who brought me to the dance. Apple, if you want me to buy one of the new iPhones, give me a choice of carriers.

Palm Pre Can Sync With iTunes - PC World. One of the cool things about the iPod Touch is that it syncs seamlessly with my Outlook Calendar, ToDo List and Contacts. Since Amicus Attorney Case Management software also syncs seamlessly with Outlook, and the Palm Centro syncs seamlessly with Outlook, both of my devices are always in sync. I am using the iPod Touch for Calendaring, along with all of the other features. Will I lose the Touch if the Pre can sync with iTunes and Outlook etc? No, because, until at least 2010, Pre users have to sign their life away to (ugh) Sprint. Will Apple sue Palm over the syncing feature? Who knows? Who cares? Pre will still be a brain dead phone until they free themselves of the Sprint chains.

In-flight Wi-Fi rolling out everywhere, and fast : Christopher Null : Yahoo! Tech. It figures. Just when the economy tanks, and most of us are cutting back on travel to save money, the airlines decide that the time is right to begin the wholesale outfitting of airplanes with on-board WiFi. I really got bored on long flights; especially since the airlines seemed to create restrictions on using smart phones and computers. What has changed? It's okay for the airlines to pull broadband satellite signals to the planes, but not the ordinary folk? Oh, wait. They get to charge us $8 to $13 per flight (that's about $200 a day). Well, even if I start flying again, I would think a few times before adding another $13 to the flight cost just for an hour of Internet access. Actually, with my broadband card, and airport access, I looked forward to an hour or two of being out of touch. If that gets out, the airlines might start charging us for peace and quiet on the airplane.

SnapperMail. I have been waxing poetic about all the things the iPod Touch can do well; primarily due to its big, beautiful screen. However, my trusty Palm Centro, which sits on my right hip everywhere I go, is the best mobile email and phone machine I have ever used. It is small enough to fit comfortably in one hand, has a physical keyboard that can be efficiently used with one thumb, and is a great way to check email on the go. With the addition of SnapperMail, and its new Version 3, which handles email and attachments easily, it is a perfect mobile communication machine. Texting is easy with the thumb keyboard, and the screen is not too small and not too big. It is just right. Road Warrior, you really need to be using one of these.
