If, as rumored, Apple is in discussions with Verizon Wireless about a CDMA iPhone next year, the Futurelawyer may find himself in a quandary. I love using the Palm Centro for phone calls and quick and dirty email, because it is narrow and fits easily in one hand. It also has a hard keyboard that I can manipulate with the thumb of the hand I am carrying the Centro in. However, I love the big screen and apps of the iPod Touch, and use it for many things. I had planned on upgrading the Centro to the Palm Pre when Verizon gets it in early 2010. Now, if Verizon also gets the iPhone, I will have a big decision to make. Will I give up the keyboard for one device that does it all? At least, it will be a fun choice.

I use WordPerfect, in conjunction with my forms database, and with ProDoc, to create most of the documents I use. I am comfortable with WordPerfect, I like being able to Reveal the Codes to improve formatting, and it is easier to use. However, I also use Outlook, and, when I recently upgraded to Office 2007, the new Microsoft Word came along for the ride. I have to say I like Word, and, since a lot of people use it, I often get documents in Word format. I also send out documents in Word format, so that others can easily view them. I like this free download from a Chinese programmer, which tabs open documents. Tabbed browsing in Firefox makes my life easier, and tabbed documents in Word makes it easier to see what I am working on. If you use Word, you should download this little free add-on.

I have always valued the principal goals of scouting: A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. The $900 10 megabyte drive I bought for my first portable computer (a Toshiba that weighed 15 pounds - really portable) has morphed into a $149 120 Gigabyte 1 7/8 inch drive for my Dell ultralight. The change from analog to digital storage has been even more amazing, as this little chart shows. Check out the audio file storage capacity of a 12 inch LP, compared to the modern day iPod with 120 Gigs of storage. Of course, nobody needs to carry around 83 days worth of audio files. But, will storage capacity ever become irrelevant? Once everything is in the cloud; then, access to the cloud will be the big thing. Maybe it is my old, traditional bones; but, I like holding my entire audio collection in my old, cold hands. Just give me a battery, and a star to dream under.

I was sorry to learn of the passing of Sister Margaret Victor, the Sisters of St. Joseph nun who terrorized me into obedience and studiousness in the Sixth Grade at St. Paul's School in Jacksonville, Florida in the 1950s. One of my schoolmates remembers that we called her the "Evil Eye" because of her withering stare. I credit her insistence upon discipline to much of my success and ability to focus diligently on tasks. I find it interesting that we don't much consider life influences until one of them passes from this earth. The obituary photo shows the softer habits that nuns have adopted in recent years. In the Fifties and Sixties, their brows were covered in starched white, and their collars looked like starched torture. I always attributed the stern demeanor to the uncomfortable clothes. However, the schoolhouse discipline that is missing from modern day education made us into better students, and, ultimately, better human beings, better prepared for the challenges of adult life.
