Offender Locator banished from iTunes App Store | iPhone Atlas - CNET Reviews. With all of the bad press Apple has been getting lately about deleting, or not approving, applications for reasons that may, or may not, be legitimate, it would be easy to pass by the recent deleting of a paid version of the sex offender location registries that have been cropping up recently. The publication of the current addresses of persons who are listed on State sex offender registries is problematic. Sometimes, they include persons who no one would consider a threat. However, sometimes, they include some really bad people, and, as the parent of children, I would certainly want to know if they lived on my block. Sometimes, free speech conflicts with other rights. Do we want the Apple Corporation deciding which prevails in a particular situation? On the other hand, it does seem unseemly to profit from a registry listing that should be in the public domain. I am getting a headache from all of the back and forth on this issue. I guess, in the end, I come down on the side that it is none of Apple's business what public domain information I get to see. By the way, in Apple's defense, they are apparently only taking down the paid version. The free version is still available.
