My friends are starting to call me a "Droid Salesman". I confess, I haven't been this enthused about technology in a long time. However, in my defense, this is the closest I have ever been to my dream of carrying all the technology I need around in a pocket. Examples:
1. I no longer carry a video camera; not even a tiny Flip video camera. The built-in 5 megapixel Droid camera, and the video applications are all I need.
2. Ditto for a point and shoot digital camera for family and walk around shots. No need for it, with a competent 5 megapixel camera built-in to the Droid. And, I can store thousands of photos and videos on the removable micro SD card. If it runs out, just pop another one in.
3. I have, obviously, a cell phone, and mobile email and web device.
4. I no longer carry a portable scanner when I travel. Just download Scan2pdf, and use the Droid camera to scan any document, convert it to pdf, or editable text document.
5. Financial calculator. A fast download and you can compute any amortization schedule.
6. Law library. (OK, I never carried books or CDs around to get case law). However, with Google Scholar, I can download and view the full text of just about any case ever decided. Free.
7. Bar Code Scanner. (OK, I never carried one of these, either). However, point the Droid at any bar code. Snap. Shoot. It will tell you all about the product.
8. GPS. I always used to carry a GPS when I traveled. I would put it in the rental car, and I could find my way around. I preferred theTomTom, but there are a lot of them out there. Now, I have a GPS built in to the phone, and Verizon and Google provide free turn by turn voice navigation anywhere. And, I don't have to download new maps all the time, or pay subscription fees.
9. Compass. (OK, the last compass I carried around was in the Boy Scouts). However, having a digital compass makes me feel better. If I get lost, I can just point South, and walk back to the Sunshine State.
I still have to wear my digital watch, because it can tell the temperature, and give me an altitude reading. Geeky, but cool, no?
In summary, I have ditched a briefcase full of gadgets for a tiny, slim magic box that educates me, entertains me, helps me practice law, helps me find my way to the courthouse, and a host of other functions. Now, if I can figure out a way to use it to brew a perfect cup of coffee...
I love my Verizon Droid too. I had stuck with Palm smart phones previously but I love this phone tremendously.
