I Swear - I Just Went In To Look

 Well, I had to see if the Droid Incredible really was. So, yesterday afternoon, I headed down to the local Verizon Wireless store to check out the new phone. The delivery had been delayed, and many buyers were going after the instant rebates and discounts at Best Buy and online. So, the store had just gotten in 30 new Incredibles. The salesman was just as eager as I was to look at this speedy, beautiful new Droid. I fell in love immediately. I left the store with two new Incredibles, one for my and one for She Who Must Be Obeyed. The Moto Droid I was using is now in the hands of my son. I have to wait for the rebate now, and I spent $50 more than I would have online; but, this phone is amazing. The Snapdragon processor is much faster than the original Droid or iPhone, for that matter. It has an 8 megapixel camera that will make point and shoot digital cameras obsolete. I know I sound like a fanboy, and the first glitch will really frost me; but, if you are in the market for a new phone, you have got to look at this one. Android on steroids. Thinner than an iPhone. Lighter than air. Gorgeous screen. Snappy and sensitive touch screen. Great speaker. I think I may keep this one for a long time.

School Principal Wants Parents to Ban Facebook ~ Chris Pirillo.   As with more and more issues as I grow older, I am of two minds on this one. On the one hand, Facebook and other social networking sites can amplify the bad choices and immature decision making of younger users. On the other hand, they can be valuable tools to teach kids socialization skills; skills that I lacked when I was young. There are many hard lessons to learn in a normal life; the proper use of Facebook or other social Internet tools is one that it is the responsibility of parents to teach. Teach, learn, know, understand. Parents, teach yourselves. Teachers, stay in the classroom and out of the home, unless there is a safety or life threatening problem. Also, as with most modern problems, the fault, Dear Brutus, is not in the Internet, but lies in ourselves. (Apologies to the man from Stratford-on-Avon).

There was a time when Palm was on the leading edge of handheld computer design. There was a time when I salivated at every new Palm product, and greedily grabbed one for myself. There was a time when a Palm was part of my wardrobe, and accompanied me every waking moment. But, alas, time marches on. Old friends die. Sometimes, they get sold to a new owner, and die with a barely audible whimper.

Welcome to our Wireless World.   Well, today is the day of the Droid Incredible launch. If you haven't bought an Android phone yet, this may be the one. And, if you are willing to sign up with Verizon for two years, you can have one for as little as $149 online. That is pretty amazing for a phone with an 8 megapixel digital camera built-in, free turn by turn GPS navigation, and the best wireless network on the planet. You can check them out at Best Buy or the local Verizon store, if you don't want to buy sight unseen online. The only possible negative I have seen about these is whether the OS will get regular updates like the Droid. HTC also uses the Sense UI, which is a matter of taste. See for yourself, and let me know how you like it.

5 Ways Facebook Should Improve User Privacy - PCWorld.   Facebook is creating a lot of controversy with its new instant personalization service, which is a clever way of saying it will publish everything it knows about you to everyone on the web it knows about, unless you "opt out", and travel through nested menu systems to do so. Google just got burned for doing the same thing with Buzz, and Buzz is a flop so far. Facebook makes a lot of money with ads and such; but, if the company fails to take better care of their users' privacy, they may start losing users and revenue. In the meantime, get thee to Facebook, and change your privacy settings.

That's gratitude for you. I introduced Chuck to the Droid, and now the student becomes the teacher. Oh, well, this means I don't have to write the story. What A Bargain! 10 Megabyte Hard Disk For Only $3,398!

The Hard Disk You've Been Waiting For - Hard disk - Gizmodo.   While we are cruising down memory lane, this ad reminded me of my first notebook drive purchase for a Toshiba dual floppy portable computer. (Portable because it weighed less than 15 pounds!). I paid $900 for a 10 megabyte drive, so this drive, at $3,398 for 10 megabyes, wasn't much of a bargain.

Sony announces the end of an era - pulls plug on floppy disc production.   Die, evil disk, die! One of my first computers was so large it used 8 inch floppy disks to boot. Here is a photo of one. I refuse to divulge the year; but, it was before some of you were born. I haven't bought a computer that could even read tiny 3.5 inch floppies in a few years. I remember discussions about archival storage on floppy disks that centered on the flimsy nature of the beasts; but, I don't think any of us thought that we wouldn't have any hardware that could read them. If you have to read a 3.5 inch floppy nowadays, you would probably have to buy a USB drive from the local computer store. I know a lawyer who still has a dual 5 1/4 inch floppy based computer at his office, and he still uses legal forms stored on them. Maybe someday they will be prized antiques, and collectors will hunger after them like antique bicycles. But, I doubt it.

HTC Incredible: Unboxing And Pictures | Android Phone Fans.   I admit that I want to buy an HTC Incredible in the worst way. However, I cannot justify paying $500 for it, and I am not eligible for a Verizon upgrade for another 18 months. It is amazing that the new Android phones are coming so fast and furious, and are improving each time. The good news is that I will avoid the inevitable early adopter bugs; but, there may not be many, since the Incredible is running the same OS as the Droid and other high end Android phones. In any event, if you have delayed a mobile computer phone purchase, here are some photos to look at until launch day tomorrow. Look at it this way. If you buy one of these tomorrow, you will be able to say that you have a better phone than the FutureLawyer.
