Apple iPhone to Verizon drumbeat picks up (again) | ZDNet.  Amid reports of AT&T breakdowns, and continued phone problems in major cities like San Francisco, it looks like iPhone may be coming to Verizon late this year. Of course, now that the Android phones are out, many Verizon subscribers who would have jumped at the chance to get an iPhone a year ago are no longer interested. There seems to be no shortage of customers who look past iPhone's and AT&T's problems, and will pay anything for a gadget with the Apple logo. But, there is an increasing drumbeat of customers who are very pleased with the Android phones, and the large variety of choice.

Vlingo for Android gives users full voice control over their Android phone [GIVEAWAY] %u2013 Android and Me.  One of the cool things about Android is the text to voice and voice control apps that are built-in. Click the little microphone, and say something like: "Call She Who Must Be Obeyed", or "Find the nearest gas station", and Android complies (most of the time). Vlingo, a new speech control app for Android, takes voice control to the next level. You can launch apps, do text or email, call numbers, or search for stuff, all with your voice. Just click the microphone and the app is listening. So far it is remarkably accurate. It costs $9.95, which is pricey for an Android app. However, if you MUST call or text while driving, this is the way to do it. Oh, and another thing. I am testing it with a Bluetooth earset. It works great. This is the first voice app I have ever used that works fine with a Bluetooth earset. Now, all young lawyers can say: "Find the Courthouse", and they will be on their way, complete with GPS spoken directions. If you can't find the courthouse with an Android phone running Vlingo, you need to consider a change of profession.

Gmail Detects and Warns You If Someone Else Is Using Your Account. One of the nice things about Google is that it is always innovating. Without fanfare, a security button has been added to GMail that tells you the date, time and IP address of the accesses to your GMail account. If a strange IP address shows up (like from the Ukraine), GMail will pop up with a warning message. Hopefully, this will enable you to change your password to avoid further intrusions before the bad guys. Of course, nothing is completely safe in the cloud; however, like a good burglar alarm system, you can set up your Internet life so that clanging alarm bells go off if an intruder invades, and you hopefully can protect yourself.

I could go on, but I know that you want to get back to spending all of your time looking at your smart phone options.

There is great pressure on retailers to give more value for the dollar, and Starbucks is not immune. Although there is a Starbucks 3 blocks from my house, I have a confession to make. I never liked it much. Overpriced coffee in a snooty environment. Not my cup of tea. I prefer carrying my own Internet anyway. More secure. And, I am much more comfortable in my den at home.

Share Outlook Calendar Free, Google Calendar Sync, Pocket Outlook Google Sync - SyncMyCal.  I have opined that, while I purchased licenses for Word and Outlook 2007, as She Who Must Be Obeyed and the kids use Word at school, I had a difficult time transferring the license to a new computer, and finally gave up in disgust. I didn't use Word or Outlook 2007 much anyway, given that I use Google Calendar for its automatic smart phone syncing capabilities. However, I have an old copy of Office XP, with Outlook 2002, which still works fine if I need it. But, Google sync only works with Office 2003 and 2007, so what to do? Well, if you are using an old version of Outlook, and you want to sync to Google, this little $25 program is for you. Easy to install, and works flawlessly.

People Already Waiting In Line for iPhone 4%u2014and It's Just for Pre-Orders.  The next flame I get from an Apple fan who doesn't get that I prefer Windows OS and Android smartphones is going to be required to put this photo on the wall and look at it continuously for a week. Because, fellow travelers, this photo is of a line of prospective buyers of iPhone 4 who are in line to "pre-order" the phone. The world has gone mad, and we are all of us on the brink of extinction.

Google Earth: Hiker%u2019s Edition.  The recent flap over the woman who sued Google because the GPS program told her to walk across a busy street was on my mind when I saw this news item that Google Earth is publishing a hiker edition, for the adventurous among you. The longest hike I intend to take is from the den to the refrigerator, so I won't be testing it. But, as my mom used to say when I used the "kids next door do it" defense, would you walk off the side of the cliff if they told you to?

Leave Me Alone! Disables Windows Update Nagging.  I knew that some of you would read it anyway. You are the ones I want to talk to. I know that you are smart enough to have Windows automatically updating and installing system updates. You are, aren't you? They are free and necessary to protect your computer from the bad guys. But, like a woman to whom you have been married for a long time, they can nag you to death. (Don't worry, She Who Must Be Obeyed doesn't read my stuff anymore). Nag, nag, nag, you know the drill. Well, if you download this little free utility, you will still get the updates; but, Microsoft won't nag you any more. Gee, maybe he will write one of these for wives. :-)
