BBC News - Facebook data harvester speaks out.
Litigators are already reeling under the weight of the tremendous amount of data on the Internet. It is being used for research, intelligence gathering, litigation support, electronic discovery, and just about anything data hungry lawyers can think of. Facebook is already proving a treasure trove of information for lawyers seeking to obtain an edge in litigation. Many users post embarrassing or damning facts and photos that can prove damaging in lawsuits. But, what if some clever Internet entrepreneur used the power of computers and the Internet, and mined all that public data? And, then, made it available to anyone via a torrent download? Well, a security consultant has done just that, and it may now be too late for 100 million Facebook users whose data has been collected to change their privacy settings. In fact, I suspect that there are trial lawyers and investigators out there who will be taking a look at this database. The consultant says that the data was already public, and that all he did was collect it and put it in a form that it could be searched. Scary stuff.
