Community - Saving WordPerfect Files Without Metadata. Word users are always worrying about metadata, and the possible confidential information about a document that it can store. There are even $80 per seat software programs that can alert Word users to the possibility that sending a document that contains metadata is happening.WordPerfect is superior to Word in this respect, as this article shows. My favorite solution is the WordPerfect X4 save option: "Save without Metadata". If you are emailing a document, just save it without metadata before you send it. Of course, most WordPerfect lawyers are always having to save documents in Word format before sending them out. In those cases, be careful what you include in the document.

A New Version Of Google Chrome Now Due Every Six Weeks.   I haven't thought about my browser in some time. That is a good thing, because it means it is stable and performing well. Are you still using Internet Explorer or Firefox? I like Firefox; but, it became so bloated with features and stuff that it started crashing, and I can't have that while I am browsing the web. So, I switched to Google Chrome, and it is the fastest and best browser I have ever used. Now that Google is updating it regularly, and now that extensions are plentiful and useful, I don't see any need to change again. And, wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles, it doesn't matter whether I am browsing on my computer, or my Android smart phone, or any other computer, for that matter. I am always, merely by logging in to Google, looking at the same data. I cannot emphasize enough the value of never, ever, ever, syncing data from phone to notebook to desktop to notebook to phone again. Technology that allows me to be a lawyer first, and that just works, is my Holy Grail.

Cool Tools: Light My Fire Firesteel.   Even though my idea of roughing it nowadays consists of an RV campsite without an electric or sewer hookup, I like the idea of a key ring gadget that will enable me to light a fire anywhere I happen to be. If there is any chance you will find yourself in the woods, without a cell phone, this little gadget will light up any kindling you can find, and give you some survival skills. It will light up to 3,000 fires, with a strike of the steel fob. She Who Must Be Obeyed would have no use for this. Her idea of roughing it is driving her car to a Holiday Inn nearby to where I happen  to be camping. To each her own.

iPood Not Permitted In Australia, According To Apple

Slashdot Apple Story | Apple Doesn't Appreciate Toilet Humor.   Apparently, Apple has lost its sense of humor, in addition to all of the other problems it has weathered recently. Suing a small Australian company that makes a portable camping product called iPood, for trademark infringement, seems to Apple to be a good thing to do. Apparently, Apple's execs think a consumer could be misled into mistaking a portable vessel for human excrement for an iPod. Actually, Apple's complaint suggests that it doesn't want to be associated with a company making such a product, and I understand that it must protect its mark or lose it. However, lawsuits like this just give more publicity to small companies like this. I will probably get called an Apple hater again for highlighting this news item. So be it. iThink iApple iProtests too much.

Nook for Android - Barnes And Noble Steps Up

Nook for Android now available to download, offers eBook lending -- Engadget.   I  like Barnes and Noble. When the kids were small, our favorite was the local stor e, as I wanted them to have the experience of owning books as well as reading them. So, it is no brainer to download the Nook  ereader app for Android. The big Droid X screen is bright and perfect for reading. And, Barnes and Noble has added an elending library feature that looks killer. Someday, all texts and books will be read this way.

Dell Streak- Will It Replace The Notebook In The Courtroom?

Dell Streak Launching in Late July | AndroidGuys.   I have been thinking about how buyers will use the Dell Streak, which launches next week. Of course, the fact that this will be an AT&T phone limits its attractiveness; but, the mid form factor might be a hit in the courtroom. Many lawyers use notebook computers in the courtroom now for on the fly research, presenting documents via projector to Judges and Juries, and managing evidence. They are now using iPads also, but, while thin, they are about the same size as a small netbook. The mids are big enough to handle most of these tasks, except that there isn't any matter management software yet that will do the tasks required. But, there certainly will be in the future, as the mobile form factors gain in popularity. Can you think of any uses for  a Mid in the Courtroom?

Windows Phone 7 - Worthy Competitor For Android And Apple?

Can Windows Phone 7 take on Android and Apple? | TG Daily.   There is something to love and hate in all mobile platforms. Both Apple iPhone and Android have good points and bad. Each lawyer will have to look at both and decide which is for her. However, somewhat lost in the argument has been the coming tsunami called Windows Phone 7. Anyone who believes that Microsoft is going to cede the whole mobile market to Android and iPhone hasn't been following along for the last 20 years. Phone 7 is a complete rewrite of Windows mobile OS, and looks like it might be the standard that enterprise users want; especially, if they want total compatibility with Windows 7 on the desktop, and with Outlook, Word and all the other standards that Microsoft publishes, and which control the market. So, do your homework and pick your own poison. I like Windows 7 very much, and there are some killer law office apps that are written for it. However, I am moving to the cloud, and Google apps are supreme there. So, I will likely keep both. For Mac users, I suspect that iPhone 4 OS will be the logical choice. Whatever floats your boat. But, don't count out that battleship called Microsoft. You don't want to be in the way when she turns.

Verizon Responds to DROID X Screen Issues, Not Widespread - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog.   Finis Price wants to know why I haven't posted yet about the Droid X screen issue. First, I wanted to know more. Second, unlike Apple, Motorola and Verizon are immediately replacing every Droid X with the problem, which is fewer than 1 in 1,000. Third, EVERY Apple iPhone 4 has the defectively designed antenna, and Apple's solutions are already part of Internet lore.None of them involve replacing the phones with new ones without the problem.  And, I haven't even posted about the iPhone proximity sensor problem. No sense piling on.

Coupons And Leftovers, and Discount Stores, Oh My!

Lawyer Uses Coupons, Frugality Is the %u2018New Chic%u2019 for Wealthy � Frugal Caf� Blog Zone.   I got a kick out of this post about an ABA Journal article that made an issue out of the allegedly new found frugality of some Atlanta lawyers. Surprised that lawyers would use coupons at restaurants, buy clothing at discount stores, and eat leftovers, the article describes a world most of us don't live in. I suppose that,  in the rarefied atmosphere of big law, lawyers are making sacrifices when they do these things. Out here in the real world, we do it all the time. Of course, frugality can be overdone, just like any good thing. However, being an educated consumer is the best way to conserve assets. Just be careful out there.

Droid X Update Is Downloading Now

Droid X update promises a bevy of minor fixes | Android Central.   The new Droid X OS update is being delivered over the air today, and, if you are a lawyer whose firm uses Exchange, you will see a definite improvement in mail download speeds. There are other minor updates, all of which improve what is already the best smartphone experience. Motorola is know for hardware and engineering, and it shines with under the hood issues. Here are some of the fixes:

• Improved battery charging status indicator.
• Smoother transition for camera and camcorder functions.
• Redesign of weather widget icons.
• Faster Exchange ActiveSync® email loading.
• Streamlined organization of newly downloaded applications.
• Organized favorite contacts by call count.
