Google says it may have overestimated blockage of services in China - San Jose Mercury News. Google claimed yesterday that there was an almost complete blockage of searches from China; but, today is backtracking, saying that its measuring software might be wrong. Whichever, it is clear that Google is closely monitoring Chinese censors' use of their firewall abilities. China is a walled in country, in more ways than one. This begs the question of whether the rest of the world, including Google, values money over free speech. Americans buy a lot of Chinese goods, since they are cheap, and it costs too much to manufacture many things in the United States. Will U.S. citizens take principled stands against Chinese censorhip, or will we continue to buy from China as they oppress freedom of speech in their country?
