Jupiter Jack | Car Radio Hands Free Phone | As seen on Pitchmen. Billy Mays, God rest his Soul, is the most famous pitchman of all time. I have always been a sucker for these TV commercials (guilty pleasure admission), as I am a gadget freak, and we all want to do something better and faster and cheap, right? My worst purchase of this type was the car scratch remover that turned out to be a tube of cheap silicone that left a streak more unsightly than the scratch it was intended to cover. Oh, well. However, I was recently in my local Staples, and I saw the Jupiter Jack for $10. I had seen this Billy Mays commercial on TV, and, given my last experience, did not buy it. I have seen larger, bulkier, FM transmitters at the big box retailers for as much as $79, and passed. This time, in an impulse buy, I bought a Jupiter Jack, and plugged it in to my Droid X. Imagine my astonishment when it played Pandora radio over my car speakers, and I actually made a phone call with it as a speaker phone! The quality is reminiscent of Sixties AM radio, and is a little scratchy; but, like vinyl records, sometimes sound can be TOO perfect. Listening to the Association channel over the Jupiter Jack brought me back to some interesting Saturday nights spent in my VW listening to AM radio. The dynamic range won't win any quality awards. But, for what it is, which is a cool little $10 gadget, it has earned a place on my dashboard. Go figure. Rest in peace, Billy. (Watch the original commercial, with Billy Mays, here.)
