Asus Announces The PadFone

ASUS unveils the Eee Pad MeMo 3D and the recently rumored Padfone at Computex %u2013 Android and Me. Around Christmas, we will either find that convergence has run amok; or, we will trade in our smart phones and tablets for a combination device called the PadFone. The phone, likely a dual core processor, plugs into a slot on the back of a tablet, that is powered by the phone when docked. My only problem with this is that sometimes I want to use my smart phone and my tablet separately from each other. The phone acts as a mobile hotspot for both my tablet and my notebook, and I have specific uses for each. Will you buy one of these?

Defense Attorneys Seek Alleged Victim's Facebook Postings. Is it ethical to use Facebook postings obtained under false pretenses? In this case, an alleged victim was friended on Facebook by the son of the alleged perpetrator, and the information gleaned from the posts was passed along to the Defendant's attorneys. Aside from the discovery of the posts as relevant to the crime, is there a problem with Defendant's attorneys using the information? In any event, here is another reason to friend only people you have met in person, and whom you know personally. Of course, it is also good to be careful what you say on Facebook or other social media sites.

First, it is legal to do it with Android, and illegal on iPhone. Second, gaining access to the root of your phone will give you more control over how you use the phone. You can delete the crapware that phone makers add on, and you can learn about the Linux OS that is underneath the Android OS. I haven't rooted the Thunderbolt yet; although, I want to. It is just too cumbersome right now, since HTC locked down the bootloader. However, since HTC has announced a relaxation of that policy for new phones, I expect that an update is coming which will make rooting the Bolt easy. In the meantime, I am having fun with the Droid Incredible, which is easy to root.

But, for the same reason that Facebook mail hasn't impacted Gmail, Google's coming people widget won't keep people away from Facebook. I like that each service has its own strengths. And, anything that Google can do to make email more useful is fine by me. In fact, lawyers should be using Gmail more intelligently anyway. I need to do a better job of categorizing email contacts, so that I can differentiate between personal and business emails. The "People Widget" may make it easier to do that.

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Eee- ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101. I got half of my wish this week, with the arrival of my new Asus Transformer tablet. This is one awesome tablet. It is FAST, with a dual core processor, and a beautiful 10.1 inch screen running Honeycomb (Android 3.1). It has a Micro SD card slot, a USB port, an HDMI out port, BlueTooth, GPS, WiFi, and, did I mention it is screaming fast? When connected to my 4G LTE Thunderbolt hotspot, it is as fast as my home DSL line. Amazing. It has every feature I could ask for in a tablet, and it costs $200-$300 less than iPad 2, and $300 less than Motorola Xoom. It is thinner than Xoom, and not much thicker than the iPad. It will connect to the keyboard dock when I get it; but, I have to pay $150 for one, and they are hard to come by. In the meantime, I am in tablet heaven, and I carry it everywhere. I still have my Dell Windows 7 dual tablet/notebook for heavy duty word processing, scanning, time and billing, and other law specific stuff. But, I can do a lot with the tablet, and it is so sexy. I will have a fun Memorial Day weekend playing with it. Total price, with overnight shipping and sales tax was around $450. Did I say it has an HDMI out port? You can cable it to a big screen, and show whatever video or presentation you have on the tablet. It will be great for courtroom and mediation presentations. And, it has front and rear facing cameras, so you can image just about anything. 

HTC Announces That It Will Stop Locking Bootloaders On Its Devices

Score One for the Good Guys %u2013 HTC to Reverse Locked Bootloader Decision %u203A AndroidGuys. I have done some writing about the freedom of the Android OS, and the many things that can be done to root Android phones, so as to install software from independent developers. The phone manufacturers have had a mixed history of fighting rooting; they say because they don't want someone messing up the software experience they lay on top of Android to distinguish their phones. HTC has the best Android experience, with the Sense UI interface; and, to protect it, they say, they lock down their bootloader to prevent rooting. However, their state of the art phones, like the Thunderbolt, attract tinkerers and geeks; and, as I have found out, are very difficult to root. Now,  in a nod to their customers, HTC has announced that it will cease locking down their phones. It remains to be seen whether they will publish updates to the Thunderbolt. However, there is a general huzzah in the geek community today.
