Google%u2019s Acquisition Of Motorola Was For 17,000 Patents, But Only 18 May Be Needed For Battle - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog. It would appear that Google's acquisition of Motorola, and its huge mobile phone patent portfolio, will be a huge defensive weapon in the fight to save Android. However, as with all weapons, patents can be used on offense as well. This article discusses 18 patents that Motorola received before the iPhone or iPad were gleams in the Apple eye. How about a 2001 patent that describes a "touch sensitive" sensor when a smartphone is near a user's head. Or, others relating to the use of GPS and so on. Couple this with the fact that Motorola sued Apple for patent infringement in 2010, and it looks like a draw to me. This is fine, because the whole idea is to give the consumer choice, isn't it? In the final analysis, technical innovation will continue; Android and iOS will both survive; and even Microsoft Mango might get in the mix. A lot of work for lawyers AND competition in the marketplace. Sounds like a win-win to me.
