Ask Slashdot: Project Scope For MLB Robot Umpires? - Slashdot. What's next for baseball? Robot Umpires, seriously? While I enjoy watching a game and yelling at the screen when the tracking software tells me an ump called a strike on a ball that was clearly outside, computers can't really be used to umpire baseball games. Much of the charm of baseball for me lies in the human interaction. How do you kick sand on a robot? Making baseball more like a video game is ceding control of our humanness to a machine. Is that what we really want? I am not a baseball purist either. I think every human quirk adds to the game. Designated hitters in one league, and moving strike zones and breaking wooden bats, and all of it remind me of my youth, before computers, and I can smell the dirt, and the grass, and feel the sun on my face. So, let's get computers out of baseball while we still can. When an umpire misses a call, regardless of who wins and who loses, we all win, because it reminds us that humans still control the world. Reminds me of that bumper sticker: "Life is messy, clean it up".
