Google's New Data Center Is an Abandoned Paper Mill in Finland.
The announcement of Google's new data center, in a Finland abandoned paper mill, is dripping with irony. Newspapers and paper are sinking into the sea, as data increasingly is stored in data centers that, as this Gizmodo post posits, look like the lair of an evil genius in a Bond film. I suppose that, if my data is stored anywhere, I would want it to be in the most godforsaken location on the planet. However, since it is data, and since it is accessible over the Internet, and since there are some pretty intelligent hackers out there, I am still not feeling safe and fuzzy. But, knowing that the center will be cooled by the chilly waters of the Gulf of Finland, and will be physically protected by the coastal location, does help a little. It is just that I have nightmares about all of the paper pulp that will never be born. Remember the Fifties movie, "The Blob"? I predict that there will be a remake that has a big puddle of paper pulp rising up out of the sea to engulf Internet data centers.
