Apple Realizes That Size Does Matter?

Apple's new iPhone will use bigger 4.6-inch display: report | Reuters. This report says that iPhone 5 will have a 4.6 inch display, like its Korean rivals from Samsung. We have both iPhones and a Galaxy Nexus in our family; and, believe me, bigger is better. However, even if iPhone doesn't go big with its retina display, the leapfrogging features of the super phones makes my point that choice matters, and that competition makes better choices for consumers. Without Apple's iPhone, Android wouldn't be as good as it is. And, without Android's increasing feature feast, iPhone would still look like it did several versions ago. Manufacturers are very much aware of the consumer drive for better products. They realize that their survival depends on the consumer demand. It may be a vicious circle of competition; but, it finally has put a person's business and personal life in the palm of their hands.

But, as a lawyer and a father of teenagers, and a She Who Must Be Obeyed, I have intimate knowledge of cars. Mostly, I know about maintenance, gasoline, insurance, and other wallet eating costs. I support my modest sedan, an SUV, a very old sports car, and a very old truck. (The RV has been sitting, patiently waiting for repair, for more than a year) Any Chevy big block mechanics out there? Any volunteers to pay the gas and insurance bills this month? But, I digress. In addition to needing information, on occasion, about car values for personal purposes (No, I am not buying you a new car), probate and estates law requires valuation of automobiles and trucks on a regular basis. The Blue Book is the gold standard for such valuations; and, it is a great starting point for negotiations. Zillow.com serves that purpose for real property, and there is an Android app for that, too.

Since the early Eighties, I have been on a quest for a tool that would enable me to practice law from a device that fit in my pocket. I have kissed a lot of frog tech; but, I am close to the promised land. Google Voice has, for some time, been the final destination for anyone trying to reach me with a phone call. It has given me a permanent phone number (727-537-9235), which I will have forever. But, more importantly, all of my phones, the office, every smart phone, and my home phone, are programmed to ring through to Google Voice. If I don't answer that one, the message is taken, and transcribed, and the transcription is sent to me via email. The accuracy of the transcription leaves something to be desired; but, I have never had a problem getting the gist of the message. Now, with better Android 4.0 integration, my Galaxy Nexus is the ultimate message machine. It gives me access to the world, and to my legal world. wherever I am. Who needs a receptionist? Who needs a concierge? Who needs an expensive answering service? My apologies to the people who make a living in those personal service industries. However, do not doubt that we are moving to a world in which machines will do more. I am not making a philosophical argument. But, some of us can't afford to hire human beings to do everything for us. Technology is our avenue to compete. Now, I have to consult my device to see what appointments and court appearances I have today.

New iPad complaints pile up - The Washington Post. What is thicker and heavier than the iPad2, overheats to the point of being uncomfortably hot, is more fragile than the iPad 2, takes a long time to recharge, and costs a lot of money? Why, the "new" iPad, of course. Consumer Reports, not a hotbed of Apple haters, has released a report that it is looking again at the tablet because of heat issues, and has not yet issued a recommended rating. Consumer Reports loves the new retina display, and considered, at first, that the new iPad was a significant step forward. However, the heat issue is heating up; and, it remains to be seen what the outcome will be. Do you have a "new" iPad? What issues, if any, are you having?

The Toshiba Excite is 1.14 pounds. If you don't think that is a lot, pick them up side by side. Of course, you have to be willing to live with Honeycomb Android, a dual core processor, SD card slot, and wait for the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade. But, thin and light is where it's at, as far as the FutureLawyer is concerned. My Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is thin; but, it isn't this thin. The Excite is like holding up a computer about as thick as the cardboard backing on your legal pad. Amazing.

It is strange that a regional carrier that serves Iowa and parts of several other states gets these before Mother T-Mobile. If you are a T-Mobile customer, you might want to ask. Of course, we CDMA Verizon Wireless customers have been tasting the Nexus goodness for a while now. Welcome to the party, Iowa.

However, what if you can encrypt your encryption? What if you can plausibly deny the existence of the data in the first place? This sounds like a job for "Hidden Volume" man. If the encrypted data resides in an invisible volume, you would have to be given truth serum to admit that the data exists. Just exactly how paranoid do you want to be?
