Surface to arrive with Windows 8 on 10/26, says Microsoft | Microsoft - CNET News. Key the date, October 26th, because that is the official launch date for Windows 8 and the ground-breaking Surface tablet from Microsoft. There is a catch, however, for the ground-breaking part. Because, the tablet will be running Windows 8 RT, it won't be running legacy Windows software. The ability to morph into a full Windows notebook with both tablet and notebook functionality is ground-breaking; but, that doesn't come until 90 days later. That means you won't be able to buy the Pro edition until January. Whether the Windows 8 system is too little and too late in a world dominated by iPads and Android tablets is the big question. Will the mobile apps be compelling? Will the units be modular; so that you aren't carrying a 3-5 pound tablet around? Will you carry a heavy tablet around after toting a 7 inch Nexus 7 or a 10 inch iPad? We shall see.
