Success! Raspbian Running On The Pi

The Raspberry Pi is a cute little computer on a card. This photo shows the Debian build called Raspbian that I am running now. I will be working with it over the weekend when I get some spare time. So far, I have plugged in a 16 Gig Micro SD chip, a wireless USB mouse, a USB keyboard, both plugged into a USB hub, so I still have room for a couple more USB peripherals. I am using my desk monitor for HDMI input from the Pi. I have connected to the net via network cable. I am anxiously awaiting one of the kiddies to hack Ubuntu or one of the flavors of Android to install on the Pi. The Pi is not the fastest or most powerful chip on the block, so it will take some time and dedication. I am still trying to remember my Linux codes from Ubuntu. Even the GUI is difficult to navigate right away, and I am trying to remember how to install packages, etc. I seem to remember a super command: sudo that is pretty powerful.

Raspberry Pi - Teach Yourself Linux

Raspberry Pi | An ARM GNU/Linux box for $25. Take a byte!. I finally received my Raspberry Pi credit card sized $35 computer. I paid the extra $10 for the networking option, and I spent another $20 for an Adafruit plexi case for it. Here is a photo. It has a couple of USB ports, and SD card slot, video out, HDMI out, and sound out. It also has an Ethernet port for an Internet connection. It was fun downloading a Debian port for this little computer; although, ports of Android are getting out slowly. This is a hobbyist's computer; but, it is suitable for teaching kids to program, and for specific business apps. It does respectable video, all the normal stuff like spreadsheets and word processing, and you can go bare with Linux, or put a Graphical User Interface on top of it. I am going to see what legal apps I can load on it this weekend, and will report back. If you get one, you will need an SD card with at least 4 GB of storage. I used a micro USB from an old phone, with 16 Gigs, and an SD adapter. You have to download a Debian image, and use a disk imager to port it to the SD card. Once you apply power to the micro USB port on the Pi, Linux will load automatically.

Blah, blah, blah. Well, ten million units later, Samsung is going the Note one better. How about 5.55 inches? This honker looks like a tablet. In fact, what will I do with my Nexus 7 if I have a phablet that is also a phone, also runs Jelly Bean, and...blah, blah, blah. Why, you know the FutureLawyer will have to have one of these, right? If only to tell you why we don't need another big phone. I like the stylus, however, and I like that Verizon is getting this one. Look for them in stores by the end of the year.

I have been using a custom Jelly Bean ROM for my Galaxy Nexus; however, Google has released the real deal and it is all over the web already. Of course, Verizon will take months to approve it; but, for the handy among you, it is pretty easy to download Nexus Root Tookit 1/5/3, and follow instructions. I had to unroot and relock mine, and flash back to the stock Ice Cream Sandwich before I could apply the official Jelly Bean ROM. It flies, and Google Now has been updated with settings to tell it your favorite sports teams, and what cards you want on the Now screen. So smooth, so fast, and so incredible. 

Dell Duo 12 Is A Worthy Successor

Dell Duo 12. .I still have and use my Dell Inspiron Duo. I have loaded Windows 8 Release Preview on it, and it works like a charm. Now, Dell has seen the wisdom of the hybrid form factor, shaved an inch of thickness and bulk, and is releasing a successor tablet with a flippable screen that turns it into a notebook. Before its time, indeed.

Samsung introduces first Windows Phone 8 device | ZDNet. Samsung certainly hasn't let grass grow under its feet. Notwithstanding the Apple verdict, the company has announced its first smartphone running Windows 8. No pricing info yet; but, the phone has some great specs, and you will be seeing a lot of Windows 8 devices before the end of the year. This is now a three horse race.
