Microsoft's year of launches: big buzz and a few bumps | Business & Technology | The Seattle Times.
Given Microsoft's introduction of the most ambitious operating system upgrade in its history, and the failure of the Windows RT Surface tablet, it is a fair question to ask whether Microsoft will remain relevant in an Internet world dominated by mobile phones and tablets. Apple, Google and other companies have grown up with the mobile world. Microsoft still rules the desktop and the notebook; but, it appears that the standalone computer is on its last legs. That said, there are millions and millions of Windows computers out there, and real businesses depend on them to get real work done. It will be interesting to see if Microsoft can keep the legacy productive software business alive in an increasingly mobile age. I can't imagine practicing law without my Windows 8 notebook; will Microsoft win me over to the mobile tablet world of Metro?
