BlackBerry Never Had a Chance: Mobile Innovation Is Over | Wired Business | Wired.com.
I was thinking about the lack of innovation in mobile tech when I came across this article in Wired. The thesis is that innovation is over in the mobile space. There are only so many ways you can create a mobile phone device. Once the handheld form factor is set, you can only change the externals, like screen size, placement of icons, etc. It is like going to the grocery store, and expecting innovation in bag design. Will that be metal or plastic, sir? Sometimes, innovation isn't what is necessary. Buttons, for example, were an innovation in clothes fastening devices, when invented. However, now they just vary in color, design, and materials. Where is the innovation in button design? So, do not lament the lack of innovation in smartphones. Ask rather how fast, thin, functional, and beautiful they can become. I will call it innovation when they can be implanted between my eyes and ears.
