Columbus Day - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Today we celebrate the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, who was either an intrepid adventurer and holy man, or an opportunist who cared only about money. This dichotomy is somewhat ironic, in a country that has as many personalities as can be described. I would mention that this is a Federal holiday, and all you non-essential Federal employees may take the day off; except, you already are, aren't you? Even if you believe that Columbus was the first practitioner of native American genocide, history is replete with examples such conquest. Like other American holidays, it is more about the celebration of life, and can be made to be anything you like. Just as America has become an example of all that is good and evil in the world, the day is what you make of it. I choose to make it a day in which I will seize the present, and try not to worry about the past or the future. Because this is America, you are free also to do with it what you will. Try not to rain on my parade while you do it.
