Rise And Fall Of The Pico-Projector

Samsung Galaxy Beam 2 launches, pico projector in tow | Pocketnow. Samsung is reissuing the Galaxy Beam, hoping that the pico projector will take off this time. Unfortunately, these underpowered projectors just don't have enough lumen power to make decent projectors. I have a couple of small projectors that I never use; both because they have to be plugged in to work, and I may as well use a larger, brighter model; and, because they just aren't bright and sharp enough for real work. I love the gadget aspect of these, but I will pass until the technology is usable.

Say It Ain't So, Google!

Google is winding down Google Plus, says report. Does it make sense?. The departure of Google+ chief, Vic Gundotra, is rumored to have been the result of Google's move of the Plus team, and decision to put Plus on the back burner of Google priorities. Given the growth and success of the platform, I find this worrisome, and hope it stays in the rumor category. I learn from Plussers every day, and it is the real lawyer's water cooler in a virtual age. Think of it like a limitless coffee shop where we make contact with people from all walks of life, with shared interests. Facebook, on the other hand, is where family and friends of long standing generally reside, and the contacts are more personal in nature. Facebook is a virtual home, church, or school. There is room for social contact and interaction in both places. Google, don't forget that social media is the future. 

Tiniest Earset In The World

I love taking fliers on Chinese manufactured products. The Chinese are doing some of the most innovative stuff in the world. This is the tiniest earset on the market, and fits entirely inside the ear. When I got it today, I realized that it is a good thing that I know something about bluetooth; because the instructions and box were all in Chinese. Not my first language. I am charging it now and will do a review later. However, I thought the Chinese attempt to put cute marketing slogans on the package for the U.S. market was interesting: In big letters on the box appears: "GOOD FOR COOL". I suppose they mean you will look cool if you were the earset. At least we would if these were the Eighties. Sigh.

Legal Memory - Lite Version - Android Apps on Google Play. Regardless of what you may read, there are plenty of useful Android apps that have legal utility for lawyers. One of my readers got into Android and then programming from reading the blog. I am impressed with his first effort, which is a tool for law students that makes a game of learning the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. I suspect that Federal practitioners might also find it a challenge and a learning tool. Hmmmm....wonder if the future lawyer terminator robots will use Android?

Too Cool For Words

I took delivery of my new Mini-Jambox today. You may remember that I got it for $106 on Amazon's deal of the day. I had passed on it at retail of $179. But, while the sound is amazing and fills my office, to cool thing is that it connects via Bluetooth to my phone, while it is sitting in the dock. The USB cable is just charging it. The really cool thing is that, while I am listening to the Four Seasons by Vivaldi, if I get a call, the Mini Jambox mutes itself, and I can take the call through the Jambox. When I end the call, the music picks up where it left off. Here is the new addition to the FutureLawyer gadget stable, in action:

 

OnePlus One - Are You Tempted?

OnePlus One makes its official debut | Android and Me. When it is available later this month, the OnePlus One smartphone will have the best specs of any handset ever made.  But, in the end, the carrier controls this market; and, without Verizon, it will be a long slog for the OnePlus One. Any of you out there plan to buy this phone?

WiFi Security In A BYOD World

Limit Wi-Fi Access for Users Who Bring Their Own Devices | Law Technology News. Yesterday, I was talking about the Bring Your Own Device movement, and pondering how lucky I was to only have one user on my network. Today, I am doubly blessed, because if you have an office network, a herd of cats...uh, lawyers, and an IT Administrator, BYOD is a problem. In addition to keeping all of the various devices secure, you now have to worry about users having access to the entire network over WiFi. It seems to be a no brainer to enable WPA security on the system; but, that isn't all you have to do. You need to partition the portions of the network that you don't want guests to have access to. Say a client is in the office and needs WiFi access. Do you have guest accounts set up so that an unscrupulous client won't access sensitive information? Did I say I was happy I am a solo?
