Samsung Announces The Gear S

Samsung's new smartwatch, the Gear S, can make calls and go online without a smartphone - The Next Web. The Gear S (Gear Solo) was announced by Samsung yesterday, to be available in October. It has a 3G chip, and can take and receive phone calls, texts, emails, and other data without connection to a smartphone. While I need the bigger screen of my Note 3, this will be a useful device for those who don't want to carry a phone around. In fact, it is a smartphone on the wrist, and, with S Voice, will be a repository of information on your wrist. This one could be the game changer.

All My Computers Are Wearable Computers

There has been a lot of talk lately about wearable computing; and, whether lawyers and professionals will adopt wearables as tools for their practices. Forgotten is the fact that computers have been wearable for a while now. We are just getting more variety in computing that can be worn on the body. For example, while some of you think it is dorky to carry a smartphone on your belt, in a case that clips on, it is the most convenient way for me and others, and allows fast and easy access to the phone. In fact, if you are carrying your phone in your pocket, you are "wearing" it, aren't you? My SmartWatch is on my wrist, and connected to my Smart Phone and Headphones via Bluetooth. The LG Tone Plus headset sits on my neck unobtrusively, and I can use one bud for phone calls, and the other for music and video. Three devices, one worn on the neck, one worn on the wrist, and one worn on the belt. Hey, what do you know? Wearable computing comes to the legal profession!

And, in the category of "not in my lifetime" we have a wearable computing device called an activity tracker that is sewn into the shirt and will keep you up to date with the effects of exercise and training on your body. Having a body made for the lounge chair, as I do, makes this somewhat of a non-issue though, doesn't it? If you have a physique that deserves activity tracking, go for it. Otherwise, don't wake me up.

When 3G and 4G pipes are jammed, your phone can drop to 2G, making it vulnerable to Stingray and interception. Of course, no com is really secure these days. Enforcement, discovery, and transparency are the only real ways to deal with insecure networks. So, in a time in which we are trying to protect the homeland, let's be careful out there.

Amazon Fire Doused With Reality

Web traffic data suggests Amazon only sold 35,000 fire phones. I love Amazon. Amazon is a friend of mine. I buy all sorts of stuff on Amazon. I do not, however, have an Amazon tablet or phone. Disclosures recently that Amazon Fire phones have only sold around 35,000 units should convince Amazon to stay with what they know. Now, I think I am going to look for some accessories for my non Amazon phones.

If not, before you continue, Google it, and get some historical context and perspective. Okay. You back? Google wants to be the repository of all human knowledge. They are getting there. However, it appears that some people and courts don't want to be part of the parade. Like the Sixties generation in which I grew up, they want no part of whatever this world is becoming. So, Google has had to offer a form and a method to delete yourself from Google's search engines. If you want to reprise Timothy Leary of the Sixties, file the form. Then, we promise to forget you ever existed. Actually, before he died in the Nineties, Leary was involved in computers and video games. Go figure.

ASUS And Its First SmartWatch

ASUS Teases its First Smartwatch Again. Here is a teaser ad for the new ASUS SmartWatch, which will be shown soon at IFA2014 in Berlin. ASUS seems always to be a little behind the curve for new gadgets; but, when it comes out with a product, it is sure to be less expensive than comparable stuff, and very cool. I am now wearing only the Gear 2 Neo, which I love. While it doesn't have Android Wear like my other Samsung watch, it is lighter, and I actually prefer the non-metal plastic watch, paired with a traditional leather band. To each his own. Just make certain you know what time it is.

Android tip: Your volume buttons can double as a camera shutter - Pocketables. Most of us are using our phones as our primary camera. One of the annoying things about the cameras, however, has been the lack of a shutter button. We were all used to pressing it with our right index finger to shoot a photo. Newer versions of Android, however, have made this a non problem. While you can get apps to make your volume button double as a shutter, I am happy with the built in Kit Kat command to tap to take a photo. Just tap anywhere on the screen to activate the shutter, and, boom, photo taken. Now, get out there and take some pictures.
