My CookBook: View your recipes on the wrist ['Watch' This App]. I don't cook. I eat. But, if I were a cook, how handy would it be to get rid of the cookbooks, both paper and tablet and phone, and just glance at my watch as I go through the recipes? Android Wear is a smooth, readable SmartWatch interface that I have found very useful in my professional life. I can glance at the watch when it vibrates and see all my email, texts, phone calls, and Google Now notifications. It even prompts me when my favorite movies or TV shows are available. Reminding me of calendar events has saved me on more than one occasion from being late or absent. For a cook, how cool would it be to follow a recipe or video as you work in the kitchen? Just let me know when dinner is ready.

A Verizon App Store? Say It Isn't So!

Report: Verizon considering launching their own apps store. It is bad enough that the price of access to the stable Verizon universe is tons of bloat ware that won't go away unless you root and unlock the phone. Now, Verizon is prepping its own App Store to compete with Google Play Store. I am all for variety and choice; but, Verizon and other carriers have not distinguished themselves for their app efforts in the past. I will tell you what, Verizon. If you put your new App Store in my face, and don't let me delete it, I will root the phone and delete it. Happy now?

In fact, I had to watch the commercials several times before I understood the point. You can create your own family with Sprint, and get separate bills, and still get the volume discounts. But, alas, Sprint wasn't making money on the deal, so Hamster Dad is going to be dead soon. Hey, he's just an annoying little animal. But, who is going to fix the car now?

Samsung Note 4 Seeing Eye Phone Cover?

Sensor technology has advanced and the new Galaxy Note 4 will have an ultrasonic cover with sensors that will be able to warn the user of obstacles. While primarily for sight impaired humans, this kind of technological magic will be of great use to ordinary people who always have their head in their phones.

 A good friend died yesterday. I had known him for many years, and, like many males, we didn't get together as often as we promised. His death came as a surprise. His wife, also a friend, posted this poster on Facebook. Her simple comment was: "You Don't". 
If you have a good friend, call them right now.

Car Enhancement...The Wearable Car

Given my recent interest in wearable computing and devices that enhance the use of computers, I was intrigued by this motorcylcle/car, the Elio, which serves as a local enhancement to your big gas guzzler. The biggest selling feature for me was air conditioning, which is an essential in Florida summers. I put a deposit down, and the sub $7.000  price is certainly attractive. At 80 miles per gallon of gas, you can imagine the savings. In fact, one of the coolest things about this car is that you can pay for it by agreeing to pay three times the amount of each gas purchase, with two thirds going to the car's price. So, if you pay $60 to fill the tank, you are charged $180, and $120 goes to the purchase price. Given that you will be able to drive three to four times the same distance with each fill up, you are essentially getting the car free. Awesome. I expect to take delivery next year, and I will report back. Of course, now that I have reserved one, it will probably take two years. Oh, well.

 

Battery Power - We All Need It

The Samsung commercials about the removable batteries and superior battery power of its phones versus iPhones notwithstanding, we all need battery power. We all need to recharge our devices. While Lithium Ion batteries have given us minimum day long battery power for our devices, some of us are more disciplined about rechargin than others. Unless I am out all day long, and using my devices all day long, (when I carry spare batteries) my regimen involves plugging everything in at my desk before bed. I own several battery extenders, like the Incipios shown here; but, I have never needed them. I carry a small extra battery for my SmartPhone if I anticipate a heavy use without access to an outlet. Both of the SmartWatches I wear every day will go a couple of days with normal use, so plugging them in every night is overkill. But, a device with no battery is useless, no?

Windows 8? We Hardly Knew 'Ye

Looking Ahead To Windows 9 | TechCrunch. The truth is that I never met a Metro Interface that I liked. Legal blogging is generally boring; but, the Windows Metro interface is a pain. So, let's talk about Windows 9. Windows 9? It isn't ever here yet! Well, that is right; but, I know something, in my gut. Windows 9 will be a lot like Windows 7. Remember Windows 7? The one that we all liked? The one that  preceded Windows 8, which we all hate? Yes, that one. Well, most of us actually paid extra money so that we never had to see Metro again. (Yes, I know Microsoft doesn't want us to call it that...I don't care). The focus in Windows 9 will be on the desktop, where most of us live. Huzzah!

Happy Belated Left Handers Day

I don't know when I realized I was different from the other kids. Perhaps it was in first grade, when the nuns rapped me on the knuckles for writing left handed. When I got home, my enraged mom marched me back to school, and I got my first lesson in how to talk to authority figures. Not. After my mom was through, I was permitted to let my natural left handedness take over, and I never looked back. It is a good thing I wasn't born in the time in which "sinister" became the definition of left handedness. Anyway, our day was August 13th. I don't know how I missed it. But, being left handed means being a little off, right?

WiFi Is Great - Until It's Not
