The Science of Why No One Agrees on the Color of This Dress | WIRED. Unless you have been under a rock the last 24 hours, you know about the viral dress that has been making the rounds of the Internet. Apparently, how we perceive background light or dark has a lot to do with how we perceive the color of the dress. I am a morning person, and I am predisposed to see light; so, my first perception was that the dress was white and gold. However, once the background light darkens, I can see that the dress is actually blue and black. This reminded me of the old joke about law practice, which I shall not repeat, except to comment that our job as lawyers often is to paint a picture of facts that favorably impacts our clients. We create the background light that illuminates our client. The lesson here is that perception is not always reality; but, it certainly can color our reality.
