Google Scholar. One of the best kept secrets in the legal research world is the free, easy to use, Google Scholar. Google has literally compiled a database of just about every case reported in the United States, both State and Federal, and married the database to the best search engine on the planet. One of the best things about Scholar is not that it is a great case finder; but, that you can harness its power to be a free legal assistant. The Alert feature allows the user to create a search query that will daily look for cases within its parameters and deliver them to your inbox in full text. Amazing. For instance, I created one to follow Florida cases regarding standing in mortgage foreclosure litigation. This morning, I got a case on standing from the Fourth Circuit that is on point, and will assist me in my work. Why are you paying a human being to do your research? Why are you paying a legal publisher to do your research? Scholar.google.com. It's free.
GS is particularly helpful in following decisions of particular judges. Just plug in the judge's name into Google Alert and, bingo, that judge's decisions are delivered to your email inbox.
