How to Create an Image of Your PC Before Upgrading to Windows 10. If you have followed my advice, you are imaging your hard drive at least once a week. In the event of catastrophic failure, you can just restore the image, and be back to computing as usual. This is made more important by the uncertainty surrounding a new operating system like Windows 10. This article will show you how simple it is. It will be much faster if you have a USB 3.0 port on your computer; but, in any event, you will need a USB external drive larger than your computer's hard drive. Now, get out there and create a backup image. Don't make me come over there.
Windows will not permit the creation of a system image on any USB external drive. Only a folder location, cd/dvd, or network location came up as available. I was trying to use a 1T WD My Passport Ultra (USB). The Windows system image process doesn't even detect it as a possible choice, and Macrium returns error message saying it's not a valid destination. Some hunting on the Web revealed that Microsoft apparently won't let you use a USB external drive for making system images (??)

Of course you can. I am doing it right now. Click File history and advancd. Then create image. I have a 2 terabyte USB 3 western digital drive attached and I create images twice a week. Try plugging the drive directly into a USB port on the computer.
