Google Glass - Finding Its Niche

Report: Google is distributing a business version of Glass that attaches to different glasses. The death of Google Glass may have been exaggerated. A clip on version, with a mini computer inside, is coming to business, industrial, and health care companies soon. Many businesses require workers with two hands available, and a heads up computer display would be ideal for many specific applications. Glass may never find its true purpose in the consumer world; but, in business, it will probably be a runaway success.

Miller Williams Was A Poet

Miller Williams, American poet and my professor in College at Loyola University of the South in the late Sixties, passed away recently. I was thinking recently about my writing, both poetry and otherwise, and remembered what he used to say: "Every word you add dilutes the meaning". He believed in simple, conversational tone, and realized that most meaning derived by a reader comes from their own heart; not from a bunch of words. He also was a gentle soul, and hated war and violence. We once spent two weeks analyzing a single poem, Randall Jarrell's "Death of the Ball Turret Gunner", the last line of which stays with me today: "When he died, they washed him out of the turret with a hose". Miller Williams didn't teach me how to write. He taught me how to live.

While it is automatic; some have experienced problems with the automatic updates. Some drivers keep getting overwritten. Be patient. My favorite program, Start 8, even has a version (Start 10) after you upgrade.However, I am perfectly happy, for now, with my Windows 8 that works like Windows 7. Duplicating the success of Watson, an IBM cognitive computing experiment, a startup is attempting to create an AI Attorney that can learn, research, understand questions and get smarter as it is used. I still don't think I am wrong in believing that lawyering will always require more than rote knowledge and analysis. Give me a "genuinely human" intelligent attorney any day. Of course, an AI legal assistant would be nice.

#TBT - I Remember Windows 95...We Stood In Line To Get It

Forget Windows 10: Remember when Windows 95 was new? - CNET. I think it was sometime in late 1994 that I stood in line at midnight outside the big box office supply store to buy a box containing a bunch of floppy disks, promising the next evolution in Windows, Windows 95. It was a revelation, and I stayed up all night installing it. How innocent we were back then. Apple Mac had 10 per cent of the computer market, and, after Win95 that fell to 4 per cent. It could be said that Microsoft was copying the successful Apple graphical interface; but, Microsoft had a big advantage in the business market, and most of us used Windows in our work. Was it a superior operating system? Probably not. But, it worked fine, and we got accustomed to it.

In addition to the new features and probable problems coming with the new version of Windows that dropped yesterday, you need to be aware of the new privacy policy and data sharing policy that you will be agreeing to if you use the OS. Let's start by agreeing that all operating systems want to avoid users claiming their data has been misused; so, a lot of the power granted to the corporation in the services agreement is written by lawyers attempting to avoid such claims. However, you should be aware that the new Windows 10 service agreement gives Microsoft carte blanche to collect your personal data and email and writings to sell products to you by targeted advertising and to sell your data to third parties. This is somewhat problematic for lawyers charged with safeguarding client confidential information. Suffice it to say that lawyers using any computer these days are rolling the dice. Is the risk acceptable? Probably. But, tell that to the lawyer whose data is compromised.

In the event of catastrophic failure, you can just restore the image, and be back to computing as usual. This is made more important by the uncertainty surrounding a new operating system  like Windows 10. This article will show you how simple it is. It will be much faster if you have a USB 3.0 port on your computer; but, in any event, you will need a USB external drive larger than your computer's hard drive. Now, get out there and create a backup image. Don't make me come over there.

Okay, I am being hyperbolic; but, after refusing to disclose sales numbers, and marketing Apple Watch as the rich man's SmartWatch that could only be bought online or in an Apple store, Apple will now put its watch next to the common man's Android offerings. How will Apple justify its' plus $600 price for watches with no more functionality than Android Wear models costing less than $200? In fact, the square Apple Watch face is rapidly being replaced by more traditional looking round watches with leather straps that cost over $150 at Apple.
