Windows 10 - Why You Should Wait

Windows 10 Automatic Updates Start Causing Problems - Forbes. The new Microsoft policy of mandatory updates, including drivers, is creating problems with software and peripherals which have their own automatic driver update software. NVidia graphics cards do this; and, apparently, the new Windows 10 mandatory update policy keeps rewriting over updates from NVidia, creating massive problems. This kind of problem occurs in all new operating systems, and, unless you buy a new computer with Windows 10 already installed, you should probably wait a while and let the companies get the kinks out. For now, Microsoft, which was making such strides to repair its reputation, is acting like it owns the computing world. Get back to making non-essential updates optional, Microsoft. You don't always know best.

Successful Blogging Really Is Easy

Is it really this easy?. Kevin O'Keefe posts about both of our recent efforts to explain to new lawyer bloggers that they should stop looking for magic formulas to find new readers. You can't get a readership with a checkbook. At least, not the kind of long lasting engagement that will last and grow. I learned this from Kevin many years ago at a LexThink conference in 2005. He was already blogging and gaining a reputation for being one of the leading lights in the legal blogosphere. He said be yourself and they will come. He was right, and still is. National Eagle Scout Association. I am a proud member of the National Eagle Scout Association, having earned the award in 1961. These days, it is easy to make fun of the ideals that we were taught as Scouts; but, I have lived my life benefiting from the lessons learned in scouting. Scouting is finally going to accept gay ScoutMasters, and, while overdue, I am happy that the organization I love is doing that. While none of us can live up to the ideals taught by scouting, they are goals to keep in front of us every day of our lives. A scout is:

Windows 10 - Should You Upgrade?

Windows 10, Day Two. If you want a bird's eye view of Windows 10 before you decide whether to upgrade when it becomes available next week, you could do worse than Gizmodo. However, since I am using the Desktop interface from Windows 7 in my Win 8.1 installation, I feel no need to rush. I prefer to let everyone else be the Microsoft guinea pigs. You have a year to decide, since the upgrade will be free for most of you for that long. Some are saying Windows 10 fixes the problem with the dual interface of Windows 8. We shall see.

Driver Updating Utilities - Just Don't

Never Download a Driver-Updating Utility; They%u2019re Worse Than Useless. Here is a Saturday project that you should NOT do. Go to the beach. Read a book. Pet the dog. Just please don't fall for the Driver updater utility sales pitch. This is another scare tactic sales tool that "scans" your system, and tells you your "ancient" drivers need to be updated. First, if your peripherals and computer are working fine, you don't need to update the drivers. Most drivers are automatically updated in Windows update, (which you have set to automatic, right?). Always be suspicious of so called utilities that scan your system, find "problems", and then want you to pay to fix them. Run away. Run fast. Keep your wallet closed. Okay, your Saturday project is done. That was easy. Relax.

Self Destructing GMail - EDiscovery Nightmare?

Want your Gmail messages to self-destruct? There%u2019s a Chrome extension for that%u2026 | 9to5Google. DMail is a Chrome addon that puts a tether on all your GMail. At any time in the future you can pull the GMail back and delete it. Poof. It is gone. Don't want to leave a mail trail? Send GMail with DMail, and you can revoke it at any time. While the unsend function now allows a sender to pull back an email in 30 seconds, it is usually the case that you regret sending an email much later. It is interesting to contemplate ediscovery in a world in which you can never know if you are getting all the email. Since the DMail is encrypted and can only be read by you and the recipient, it would be ideal for the new real estate regulations which take effect in October. However, will the ability to revoke the email run afoul of Federal regulations? What if your company has been served with an evidence preservation letter or order? Can the DMail be traced? Stay tuned.
